My dog ate Mexican bird of paradise seeds. He's vomiting. What now?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should start offering him small amount of water about 1.5-2hrs after the had the tablets. Start with 2-3 tablespoon of water and if he drinks it and keeps it down, you can slowly increase the volume of water every 45-60 minutes. If he is not sick after water, you can introduce some bland food, for example cooked chicken or white fish and give that to him every 2-3 hrs. You can add a bit of rice or pasta into it. If everything goes well, you should be able to put him back on his regular food within 24-48hrs.

Fortunately most cacti are not toxic but they can cause stomach and intestinal irritation leading to vomiting and diarrhea. I would with hold water for 6 hours then restart with sips of water frequently. I would fast for 12 hours and if there is not vomiting during the fast or with the small amounts of water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals for a few days. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If the vomiting is excessive or he won't eat I'd have your Vet examine him. Have a great weekend!

I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo isn't feeling well. There are a few issues that could be going on here - the plant could be something that is toxic, Gizmo could have eaten enough of the seed to cause an obstruction or irritation in his intestinal tract, or the vomiting could be entirely unrelated to the seeds. If this only just started and Gizmo is his normal happy self, you can offer a small amount of boiled chicken and rice this evening, see if it settles down. The signs you are describing can be caused by dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, bloat, or a number of parasitic infections results in nausea. Some of these conditions are potentially life threatening, so I recommend having Bullet seen by a vet as soon as possible. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In this case, dietary indiscretion is possible given that petals were ingested. Assuming the petals were not from a toxic flower, you could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Moose evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for dogs to eat dead animals found in the yard or on walks. Thankfully, in most cases the worst that may occur is some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). Monitor for GI upset ([vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/vomiting-1/) and/or [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/)), lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. If your dog is behaving normally otherwise, you can [manage minor GI upset at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea) by first withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte during this fasting period. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Continue feeding bland until there is no vomiting for 48 hours and/or the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the vomiting or diarrhea don't stop or if you see other symptoms (lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, etc.), see your veterinarian.

In looking up this plant, I can't find any information that they are toxic to dogs, but it is possible that eating it upset her stomach. Given that Roxy isn't acting any differently and is eating, I wouldn't be too worried about her just yet. I would be more worried if she having persistent diarrhea, is vomiting frequently, and isn't eating or drinking. You can try offering her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Should she return to normal (i.e. no vomiting or diarrhea), then she will be just fine. I would have her seen by a vet, however, if she starts vomiting more or having persistent diarrhea, or she stops eating and drinking. I hope this helps!
