My dog's on methocarbamol. Can I stop it due to peeing & panting?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. 500mg is a pretty high dose of Methocarbamol for a 10 pound dog. At the very high end of the "normal" dosing range the dose would be 200mg. That being said, luckily the drug is very safe even at high doses. He probably just needs to sleep it off. DO NOT give him any more medication until you speak to your vet. If he starts vomiting or the sleeping lasts more than a total of 24 hours then you need to take him to your vet or to the ER. As always, if you are really worried at this time you should take him to the ER for an exam. You know him best so if you. are worried you should act on that. STeroids should be decreased gradually. After about 5 days of this treatment with 12 hours dose, you can decrease it to 5 every 24hours with food for 5 days then 5 mg every other day for other 5 times (10days) and then 2.5 mg every other day for 5 times. At the end of this you can stop it. I would recommend to stop methocarbamol gradually but after another check up at your local vet, so they can give you precise instructions on how to do it.

I normally do not exceed 60mg daily regardless of the size of the dog just because of the potential side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding as well as the undesirable side effects you describe. I recommend you bring up your concerns to the prescribing veterinarian who knows the case well, to taper his dose down slowly. It is important to not discontinue or lower too much this medication acutely as problems can arise with this approach. For now, look for any evidence of gastrointestinal bleeding such as black, tarry stools. If observed, let your veterinarian know right away. Good luck with your boy!

Poor Max! I'm sorry to hear that he's limping. Unfortunately, it's illegal for us to advise you to give any medication to your pet without first doing a physical exam - so this is not something we can do over the internet. I can tell you, however, that Robaxin is not likely to be helpful since it's a muscle relaxant, not a pain medication per se. It's sometimes used as an adjunct treatment for dogs with certain types of back pain, but wouldn't do much good for other types of soreness. If you're not able to get Max in to see an emergency vet tonight, the best option would be to keep him confined in a relatively small area such as a crate or small room, so that he can't be too active and make the injury worse. Then take him in to see your regular veterinarian tomorrow.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Chico is suffering from heart failure. Can you provide the milligrams (mg) of each medication? I don't think the medications are causing him to pant. If he hasn't had a recheck with your Vet in a while I would schedule one to be sure he isn't still in congestive heart failure or his heart has worsened He may need adjustments in his medications. There are other reasons too for an older dog to pant more: sensitivity to heat, Cushings disease, pain, fever and cancer in the lungs. I think you should have him rechecked by you Vet it is unlikely that he is on too much medications. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Torres! What an ordeal! With out knowing what medication he was given by your Vet I am not sure how to guide you. But when dogs spend the night at the hospital they rarely sleep well. Some dogs are very stressed and stand, bark and cry the ENTIRE time. I always tell owners, especially with older dogs, that when they go home they likely will be exhausted and sleep soundly for 12-24 hours. That in combinations with a medication that causes drowsiness is likely what is hitting Torres so hard. Also when older dogs are on IV fluids they produce more urine and that may cause dripping if he is so exhausted. My recommendation is to see how 12 hours+ at home play out. If he is still excessively tired and won't eat or drink then I would call your Vet to discuss and consider a recheck. I hope this helps and I wish Torres a speedy recovery!
