My dog is sleepy and has diarrhea after methocarbamol. Is it normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Methocarbamol is Robaxin which is a muscle relaxant. It can cause sedation or grogginess. It doesn't need to be weaned and can be stopped abruptly. I would say it should be out of his system by 12 hours but some animals are more sensitive than others. I would recommend reaching out to your Vet about this side effect. If his breathing is concerning he should be seen as trouble breathing can be life threatening. If he is on other medications like steroids (medrol or prednisone) it is much more common to have these medications cause urination in the house and panting. I wish you and Porter the best!

At his weight, that's 1,225mg to 3,500mg. You gave him 1000mg, which is actually below the recommended dose range. You did not overdose him, and things will be ok. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gerson! I know you are worried but you did NOT overdose him. There is a wide dose range for tramadol of 4-10mg/kg. He is 10 kg so a whole 50 mg tablet is 5mg/kg. He is just sensitive to it. Tramadol is an opiod so he is, for a lack of a better word, a bit high. I, like your Vet, start lower at 2.5mg/kg which is the 1/4 tablet. I would watch him and in 4-8 hours he should be normal. Good luck!

Oral Metacam should be ideally stopped and as a first approach I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. If Oscar only weighs 5.5 lbs and if he was given 5mls that is 200mg of albendazole and at that dose it has been reported to cause mental dullness and decreased appetite in cats. It can also affect white and red blood cells. I don't have much information about overdoses in dogs. Stop giving him the medication. The dose of ivermectin should be ok. If he gets worse or doesn't improve he should be taken to an emergency hospital. Good luck!

Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10. The codeine could definitely be the culprit. Sedation is one of the main side effects. I would recommend calling your vet to discuss a lower dose, especially if her pain is well controlled. There are also many other medications that could be used instead to see if she tolerates a different medication better.
