Is it okay for my dog to meet a puppy without a kennel cough shot?

Yes, kennel cough is very common and spreads very easily. Pets who receive the vaccine may still get kennel cough (just like people can still get the flu even though they had the vaccine), but they tend to get less sick IF they end up getting the infection. The vaccine is not 100% protective (just like our flu vaccine) so even if a dog has been vaccinated they can still get kennel cough. The symptoms are usually milder and the course of the disease is shorter in dogs that have been vaccinated versus those that haven't so giving the vaccine is definitely warranted. I suggest you just monitor him for now since he seems to be acting normally. If the coughing gets worse or he starts showing other symptoms then get him to your vet for an exam: * ocular and/or nasal discharge * vomiting/gagging/retching * not eating * lethargy Of course, if you are worried you should take him to your vet for an exam now. Vaccines in puppies should be given every 3-4 weeks starting at 8 weeks of age. So he can be boostered at 11-12 weeks (looks like he has about a week to go). The chances of him getting something from the unvaccinated dog's owner is pretty minimal but there is always a slight chance. I personally would not be too worried about it but there are a couple things you could do to minimize risk. You could just kindly ask her to wash her hands before petting. The other option is that you don't have to let her pet him at all. You can always say you are busy training him and you would prefer that no one pets him for now if you want to avoid a conflict..... Make sure at least that amount of time has passed, and the area has been disinfected before bringing your dog in. The vaccinations you would give a puppy does not protect against any human diseases he may catch (like a flu virus). The vaccinations are for dog diseases. I strongly recommend you start the vaccinations for Coco. They should have been started at 8 weeks of age. As long as Dallas is healthy, it should be fine for Phoenix and Dallas to interact with supervision. Try to avoid or limit any time the puppy spends outside, and do not go to dog parks or pet stores with him until he has received several sets of vaccines. Phoenix is a cutie!
