Puppy had kennel cough. When can he be with my other dog again?

Make sure at least that amount of time has passed, and the area has been disinfected before bringing your dog in. Thanks for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If your younger puppy is not showing any symptoms I would definitely not treat her. Kennel cough is transmitted similarly to the common cold- so with direct contact or by sharing bowls or even by germs transferred from your hands after petting the coughing puppy. So keeping them separately is ideal if feasible, and washing your hands between handling each of them is also advised. Since kennel cough is transmitted by aerosol and direct contact you wound have to keep their kennels very separate (like in different rooms). I am not sure if your frenchie is already being treated , but Kennel cough is often viral and self limiting. But sometimes a cough suppressant or antibiotic is indicated depending on signs. I would watch him closely and have him evaluated (if you haven’t already) if he becomes lethargic, if his appetite decreases, if his respiratory rate is increased or if there is thick nasal discharge. Hi. Unfortunately there aren't any home remedies for this bacteria. The antibiotics are your best option. They are contagious as long as they are coughing. I am guessing by a week you will be good to go! Good luck.

Yes you can! But I would recommend to have them both treated for the respiratory infection as they can pass it back and forth and it can become very frustrating. The puppy might need a different size antibiotic since it is much smaller. Make sure both dogs continue to eat and drink regularly. Upper respiratory can occasionally progress to pneumonia especially in young, elderly, and immunocompromised dogs but they will usually show symptoms of not wanting to eat and being lethargic. I hope they both start to feel better.

Dogs are typically "contagious" for the first week or so of illness. To be safe, isolate Luna from other dogs for about two weeks. The cough may linger for longer but is not an indication of active infection.

It's possible that the inflammation in the airways just has not completely resolved, and the pred was helping to decrease that inflammation. If he's still eating and drinking, and he's active and happy, I wouldn't be too concerned yet. Give it another 5 days or so, if the cough is still persisting, followup with your vet. If his breathing is labored at all, or if he seems depressed or has a decreased appetite, please followup with your vet. As for being contagious, he may still be. I would wait at least another week before having him around other dogs. I generally recommend waiting about 2 weeks after recovery from kennel cough to give a dose of the kennel cough vaccine. As long as your vet feels that Dallas has a clean bill of health, it should be perfectly fine for him to get the vaccine anytime now. I'm glad to hear that he's made a full recovery and is doing well!
