How long after kennel cough exposure is it safe for my dog?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 35 lbs

There was a dog in the office that had kennel cough. How long would it take for the virus to dissipate before it's safe to bring my dog in without him contracting the virus?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Huck. The bacterial can survive for up to 48 hours on surfaces. Make sure at least that amount of time has passed, and the area has been disinfected before bringing your dog in. I would also get Huck his kennel cough vaccine, and do not allow him contact with this dog. I hope this helps!
