How long to wait between dog's Maalox, prednisone, and other meds?

Hi there. You can give the Metrolag, Doxycycline and the Prednisone at the same time. There is no problem with that. The Maalox is the one to keep separate. I would give the Maalox one hour AFTER giving the other medications. If possible you should give Chiyo a probiotic as well. All those antibiotics are going to disrupt the normal population of bacteria in his intestines which may cause additional issues. I don't know what products are available in Lebanon so you may want to call your vet and ask about getting a probiotic. Hi, There are no interactions between the two drugs and they are often given together as the omeprazole helps to protect the stomach from potential side effect that can damage the stomach and cause ulcer by steroids. The instruction to take them differ a bit, the omeprazole is to be taken on empty stomach preferably in the morning before the first meal and steroids are to be taken with food or after a meal (full stomach). While a washout period is recommended between NSAIDs like Rimadyl and corticosteroids like prednisone the actual number of days to wait has not been determined by a research study. I typically recommend a 7 day washout but there are many times I have started prednisone right away when I thought it necessary. You could ask your vet about using gastroprotectant medications like antacids to help lessen the likelihood of side effects.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chlyo, this has been a tough week for him I recommend calling your Vet. Maalox is not my first choice to fix diarrhea and vomiting. Doxycycline is an antibiotic notorious for causing tummy upset, regardless if you accidentally gave too much. High doses of steroids can cause tummy upset. Prednisone can not be abruptly stopped and needs to be weaned and in Chlyo's case is likely needed to save his life if he has immune mediated hemolytic anemia. There are other antibiotic choices to rule out tick borne disease causing his immune disease. My recommendations is to call your Vet and have Chlyo seen again today. If he was my patient I would use cerenia, metronidazole and have him on prilosec or famotidine (pepcid). I would not stop or wean the prednisone unless his red blood cell count was normal. I would temporarily stop the doxycycline until he is eating and the stool is better and consider amoxicillin instead. We can provide advice but your Vet needs to be the one to tell you what to do with the medications. It’s safe to use the prednisone with the dexamethasone shot, they are in the same class of steroids. I would wait more like 5-7 days between the last prednisone and the Rimadyl. Longer if Toby is prone to stomach upset or diarrhea. When used closely together, these two classes of medications can cause bleeding stomach ulcers.

You are correct that drugs like Deramaxx should not be given currently with steroids because of the risk of GI ulceration. There should also be a wash out period after steroid use before starting NSAIDs (like Deramaxx) appropriate in length for the time on the drug.
