Is it safe to give my dog prednisone and dexamethasone together?

While a washout period is recommended between NSAIDs like Rimadyl and corticosteroids like prednisone the actual number of days to wait has not been determined by a research study. I typically recommend a 7 day washout but there are many times I have started prednisone right away when I thought it necessary. You could ask your vet about using gastroprotectant medications like antacids to help lessen the likelihood of side effects.

The answer to your question really depends on when the injection was given, what type of steroid it was, what dose of steroid was given and what his Prednisone regimen has been, so your vet will need to answer that question. If your vet is already closed for the day, it will likely be safer to skip his Prednisone dose tonight and call them first thing in the morning to discuss when to resume his Prednisone. Some steroid injections only last for 12 hours, but some last for much longer, so you do not want Chester to have too high of a steroid dose tonight. Giving these two medications together has a very high risk of causing gastrointestinal ulcers. Personally I do not start Rimadyl until a dog has been off of prednisone for two weeks. It can be done sooner if the dog is given additional medications to protect the GI tract, but it is still risky. Is she taken a muscle relaxer? In dogs with severe neck pain, I will use prednisone, gabapentin, a muscle relaxer and an additional pain medication such as tramadol. If her pain cannot be controlled though, she may need to see a neurologist for surgery. I hope this information helps!

Metoclopramide is a medication that is used to promote motility of the GI tract and decrease acid reflux. Prednisone is a steroid medication that has anti-inflammatory properties among others. Prednisone can potentially cause many side effects, such as stomach upset. I would recommend monitoring Heather closely for any symptoms such as i appearance, vomiting, or dark stools. They are both in the same class of drugs and do the same thing but dexamethasone is a lot stronger than prednisone. It depends on why he is on it and how long you have been on it. Typically with either of these drugs, the goal is to ween off them by gradually decreasing the dose
