My dog had a seizure from low calcium. Can I still breed her?

Hello, Pregnancy is more dangerous in animals that suffer from chronic conditions, such as epilepsy. Epilepsy can also be genetically passed on to her pups. I would recommend a spay if at all possible. Keeping her as calm as possible and minimizing stress is the best thing you can do for her. I hope this is helpful. If Pinky is having muscle tremors or seizures, I would be very concerned that the problem is not epilepsy but rather eclampsia, or "milk fever". This is a life-threatening condition caused by very low blood calcium levels, and is common in toy breed dogs who are nursing large litters. This is a medical emergency, so Pinky needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. If you call your regular vet's office, they should have contact information on their voicemail message for your nearest emergency clinic or on-call doctor.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! During nursing, Jewels' body is using up a lot of calcium storage to help create milk for the nursing puppies. Consequently, this usage of calcium in her body can cause her levels to drop rapidly and cause her to go into a hypocalcemic state known as eclampsia. This can rapidly progress if not addressed right away to full on convulsions. I would recommend taking her to the veterinarian and having her calcium levels tested to see if she is in need of supplementation or not. There may be a different cause but with her feeding the puppies, this is high up on my list. She could also be cold or anxious. Regardless of the proposed cause, it would be best to have a veterinarian take a look at her sooner rather than later. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cookienear! Cookie needs to go to a vet immediately and be evaluated for hypocalcemia, which is low calcium. This is a serious condition after giving birth in some dogs. Once the diagnosis is conformed the Vet will give Cookie an injection to raise her calcium and prescribe medications. If she developed hypocalcemia with previous litters I would recommend giving the puppies a milk replacer formula like Esbilac. Goats milk is not as ideal for puppies. You also may want to consider having her spayed since this is her fourth litter and as you will find out bottle feeding puppies is a lot of work! I would not recommend introducing Hummer to the puppies until they are around 8 weeks old - older dogs often can be rough with very young puppies. This link has good info on orphan puppy care, and you can follow the information on bottle feeding. You can give the puppies back to mom after feeding as long as you supervise them to make sure they don't nurse.

There is an increased risk of uterine rupture in patients that have had a cesarean before. The veterinarian that performed the cesarean may be able to give you a better idea Jade's relative risk for this based on the state of her uterus at the time of surgery. Dogs that have needed cesareans before also at a higher risk for complications during labor in the future. I would discuss your concerns as well as the risk of complications with your veterinarian before breeding Jade again.

Pregnancy is not considered a factor that can predispose to seizures. Epilepsy in the mum is not a risk for the kittens either.
