My dog had a C-section. Can she breed again safely without issues?

Once they have an issue giving birth (dystocia) and they have had a C-section they will usually continue to have problems. If I were your vet I would have spayed her at the time of surgery. Sorry to say this but if you play the odds she will most likely need to have another C-section. Every C-section causes scarring/adhesions of the uterine lining making it difficult for the placenta(s) of the future puppies to attach. If you are serious about breeding her only use a male that is smaller than she is to reduce the size of the puppies - that may help with the birthing process but will not help the attachment of the placentas. Yes she can. Especially if she was not spayed during her c-section. You have to ask the veterinarian who did her surgery to determine if she still has her reproductive organs or not. I will say this however. Most vets will go ahead and remove the uterus and ovaries (reproductive organs) during a c-section because it is an easier and less risky surgery than leaving everything inside.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Achoos. Unfortunately, if the puppies are too large for her to safely deliver, then a C-section will be necessary again. She can have x-rays prior to delivery to determine if the puppies can fit through pelvis. There not medications that can be given safely during pregnancy to change the size of the puppies. Eclampsia, is a condition where the calcium levels drop so low due to producing milk for the puppies and producing the calcium for the bones for the puppies, that the mother dog seizures. The calicum is basically sucked out of the mother dog. This low calcium leads to seizures and repeat episodes get more severe. A dog that previously had eclampsia should be spayed and should NOT be bred again. It is very stressful and hard on the dog's body, and is very very risky for death of both the mother dog, and the puppies. I would strongly recommend spaying Bibi and just enjoying her for the darling that she is. Best of luck with Bibi.

Consecutive pregnancies are no more higher risk than staggered pregnancies. Genieva will have he same amount of risk for pregnancy complications, so getting health check-ups by your veterinarian periodically (2 times) throughout the pregnancy is the best way to be proactive and prepared for any complications that may arise. At 45 days gestation it is best to take Geineva in for an x-ray to determine how many puppies she is expecting. Hi there, Breeding can be quite the undertaking and you're correct to have concerns. Chihuahua's have narrow birth canals and often need c sections to get their puppies out. I'm not sure how much she weighs, but a difficult birth certainly could occur. I would consider whether you want to take the risk of breeding and go from there.
