My dog had calcium issues. Is it safe for her to nurse puppies?

Yes, i would continue with calcium supplementation (low blood levels can result in seizures in nursing mothers). Given her small size, i would recommend getting a dog version, in smaller, more accurate dosage such as canovel tablets or a calcium powder available from your vets office or petstore

She needs to continue to eat puppy food which is high in calories and will help keep her from becoming hypocalcemic. She should not need supplemental calcium unless the vet has currently diagnosed her with hypocalcemia. She may be shaking because she is in discomfort from her recent labor. Keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs and if the shaking continues you may want to give the calcium you got from your vet the last time she had an episode just to hold her over until she can be seen to make sure low calcium is truly the issue here. If you are worried a dog will have low calcium the supplement would need to be given AFTER the puppies were born while she is nursing. In order to confirm that is why Millie is sick your Vet should do a Calcium level on her blood. The diarrhea could be making her weak and diarrhea can be from worms. Also a fever from a uterine infection or mastitis can make her sick. I am glad she is eating but if your Vet hasn't examine her I would have that done to be sure that all she needs is the calcium tablets. It is a bit odd to have a low calcium 4 weeks after giving birth. i wish you the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old are her puppies? If they are under 4 weeks then you will need to bottle feed the puppies. If they 3-4 weeks start offering canned puppy food along with bottle feeding and have them fully weaned by 5-6 weeks. Without forcing Cali to nurse them there aren't any other options. I would suggest not breeding her again and have her spayed since she is unwilling to continue to raise the puppies and this likely will be a repetitive behavior. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend feeding a pregnant dog puppy food. MOST dogs do not need a calcium supplement. Little breed dogs are at a higher risk of low calcium. Low calcium IF it will be a problem, occurs after birth during the first few days with large litters nursing or in small breed dogs. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No. That is the simple answer. Eclampsia, is a condition where the calcium levels drop so low due to producing milk for the puppies and producing the calcium for the bones for the puppies, that the mother dog seizures. The calicum is basically sucked out of the mother dog. This low calcium leads to seizures and repeat episodes get more severe. A dog that previously had eclampsia should be spayed and should NOT be bred again. It is very stressful and hard on the dog's body, and is very very risky for death of both the mother dog, and the puppies. I would strongly recommend spaying Bibi and just enjoying her for the darling that she is. Best of luck with Bibi.

I'm sorry you recently lost Titan's mother! At five weeks of age, he's old enough to be weaned and shouldn't be nursing. I'd keep him separate from this other dog to stop the behavior. If he did nurse enough, she would produce milk for him, but he doesn't need it at this age. A puppy food is fine for him. I hope this helps!
