My dog is twitching and can't walk after puppies. Is it low calcium?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | 14 lbs

My dog had babies about about 2 weeks ago and is now panting heavily and cant walk her bodies twitching really bad mainly her front legs. She can't move her back ones at all they twitch a little. She did this same thing last time she had babies.

Cookie needs to go to a vet immediately and be evaluated for hypocalcemia, which is low calcium. This is a serious condition after giving birth in some dogs. Once the diagnosis is conformed the Vet will give Cookie an injection to raise her calcium and prescribe medications.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am concerned that her calcium level is too low. This is a common presentation known as Periparturient hypocalcemia or Eclampsia. This can be a life threatening complication and should be treated as soon as possible. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Lady so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If her calcium level is too low, I would recommend hospitalizing her and administering calcium through an intravenous solution with fluids. The sooner she is seen and treated the better chances you have of turning this around with a good prognosis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! My nursing dog is weak with diarrhea. Does she need calcium?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you are worried a dog will have low calcium the supplement would need to be given AFTER the puppies were born while she is nursing. In order to confirm that is why Millie is sick your Vet should do a Calcium level on her blood. The diarrhea could be making her weak and diarrhea can be from worms. Also a fever from a uterine infection or mastitis can make her sick. I am glad she is eating but if your Vet hasn't examine her I would have that done to be sure that all she needs is the calcium tablets. It is a bit odd to have a low calcium 4 weeks after giving birth. i wish you the best!

My dog has hypocalcemia, twitching, and is wobbly. What to do?

She needs supplemental Calcium. You can get oral calcium however IV is better. You can also get calcium SQ at the veterinarian which can be less expensive and get the calcium level up higher. The emergency clinic should be able to see you oral calcium syrup to give. Once tremors and ataxia are present it is difficult to control with oral medications however, so you may need to go back to the emergency clinic . I hope she does well!

My pregnant dog is twitching and acting weird. Is it milk fever?

Hello, and thank you for using Pet Coach. I am sorry to hear about Charlene, and I too am very worried. From her history, I would recommend that Charlene get checked out by a vet immediately. Since she is not yet nursing, it is unlikely that she is low in blood calcium (what causes milk fever), but it is still possible. There could be other causes for her odd behavior, including infection or other electrolyte abnormalities. After being examined by the vet, they will likely recommend bloodwork to see what is going on internally. You should also discuss with the vet if Charlene is on the appropriate dog food and nutritional supplements for her stage of pregnancy knowing her history of hypocalcemia. Dogs with a history of milk fever are prone to having it with each litter and you will need to be very vigilant once the puppies are born.

What to feed my dog after puppies? She's shaking, needs calcium.

She needs to continue to eat puppy food which is high in calories and will help keep her from becoming hypocalcemic. She should not need supplemental calcium unless the vet has currently diagnosed her with hypocalcemia. She may be shaking because she is in discomfort from her recent labor. Keep an eye on her for the next 24 hrs and if the shaking continues you may want to give the calcium you got from your vet the last time she had an episode just to hold her over until she can be seen to make sure low calcium is truly the issue here. Why is my nursing dog shaking? Is it eclampsia or something else?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! During nursing, Jewels' body is using up a lot of calcium storage to help create milk for the nursing puppies. Consequently, this usage of calcium in her body can cause her levels to drop rapidly and cause her to go into a hypocalcemic state known as eclampsia. This can rapidly progress if not addressed right away to full on convulsions. I would recommend taking her to the veterinarian and having her calcium levels tested to see if she is in need of supplementation or not. There may be a different cause but with her feeding the puppies, this is high up on my list. She could also be cold or anxious. Regardless of the proposed cause, it would be best to have a veterinarian take a look at her sooner rather than later. I hope this helps! Why is my new mom dog hiding and restless after giving birth?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bella! I think you need to bring her in to your vet again and have her rechecked. I specifically would ask them to check her calcium levels. Low calcium can manifest as very bizarre behavior and can be life threatening if not treated. If it isn't low calcium and she isn't better, it is still best to have her looked at again. Sometimes it can take some time for first time Mother's to accept their babies. Just keep putting her in the whelping box and allow the baby to nurse. I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
