My cat is pregnant. Is her past seizure a risk for pregnancy?

Hello, Pregnancy is more dangerous in animals that suffer from chronic conditions, such as epilepsy. Epilepsy can also be genetically passed on to her pups. I would recommend a spay if at all possible. Keeping her as calm as possible and minimizing stress is the best thing you can do for her. I hope this is helpful. I am sorry to hear about your kitty! We do routinely do surgery in many pets that have seizures, and as long as we are aware ahead of time we can prepare for this concern by doing things such as selecting certain drugs for anesthesia and having an IV catheter in place in case a seizure occurs so we have quick access to a vein to administer medication. I would say that the risk of not being spayed is a greater health risk than the risk of being spayed. I would, however, recommend having your cat examined/have work-up done which may involve bloodwork and ultrasound to ensure there isn't a cause for seizures such as a liver shunt that needs to be addressed if your cat hasn't already been examined for the seizures. I would also recommend you have your cat spayed at a full service vet clinic and not a spay/neuter low cost clinic because of her issues she is going to need more intensive monitoring than they can offer. The risks involved in spaying are the same for any surgical procedure and include adverse reaction to the anesthetic drugs, bleeding during surgery, and infection of the surgical site. These complications are extremely rare.

Poor kitty. It is very likely the seizure was due to a buildup of toxins when she was obstructed with the toy. If she hasn’t had a seizure for over 2 years now since, then I would say she is likely going to be ok health wide in that regard. If she was mature enough to come in to heat she should be fine. When the kittens are weaned at 6-8 weeks I would have her spayed though to prevent further pregnancies and to control the cat population. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No. That is the simple answer. Eclampsia, is a condition where the calcium levels drop so low due to producing milk for the puppies and producing the calcium for the bones for the puppies, that the mother dog seizures. The calicum is basically sucked out of the mother dog. This low calcium leads to seizures and repeat episodes get more severe. A dog that previously had eclampsia should be spayed and should NOT be bred again. It is very stressful and hard on the dog's body, and is very very risky for death of both the mother dog, and the puppies. I would strongly recommend spaying Bibi and just enjoying her for the darling that she is. Best of luck with Bibi.

If Jet is otherwise healthy I don't necessarily think it is dangerous for her to be pregnant. At that age we do start to see many age related diseases, and while you can screen for many diseases like hyperthyroidism and she may seem healthy on a physical exam there is always a possibility that she may have an underlying disease that puts her at risk. If you are not planning to breed her I would recommend having her spayed - cats do not stop cycling as they age unless they develop a reproductive disease.
