My dog just took a loud, unusual sniff. Is this normal or concerning?

It's really impossible to know what the noise was that Teddy made without seeing him. I would watch for any signs of upper respiratory disease like Bordetella ("kennel cough") that is a mild infectious disease dogs can acquire in any social situation where other dogs are present, like a vet clinic or boarding facility. If he starts coughing in the next few days this may be what is going on and I'd recommend a vet recheck as he may need antibiotics and cough suppressants. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry unless it continues.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I may not have an exact answer for you but it is likely normal for your dog. It could be his tongue hitting the roof of his mouth as he is "tasting" what he is sniffing. There is a olfactory gland on the roof of the mouth right behind the incisors. Or it should be his epiglottis opening and closing as he breaths or the soft palate is a bit long and it is flapping as he breaths. If something changes when he breathes normally I would see your Vet and get a work up. Good luck

I wouldn't be super concerned about it if it is only when she is sniffing the ground, but I would discuss it with Emma's vet the next time she goes in. If you can get a video of what is going on, that may help the vet see what you are seeing. I couldn't guess what could cause it right now, though!

It is possible this is a reverse sneeze. Typically, it is no cause for concern unless it begins to interfere with Aspen's normal breathing. There may be an allergic component, so sometimes an antihistamine may help decrease the frequency. Discuss medications with your veterinarian before giving any.

One or two sneezes, even if out of the ordinary, is not necessarily problematic. Consider if you or someone you know sneezed a couple of times and if you would be extremely concerned even if you hadn't heard them sneeze previously. Unless you are seeing Tuxedo sneezing on a semi regular to regular basis, she does not need to be examined by a veterinarian. There is a definite possibility that she could have just been exposed to something that has caused some mild irritation, or she could be coming down with a cold. Continue to monitor for signs of nasal discharge, coughing, or exercise intolerance. Should any of these occur, have Tuxedo examined at your next convenience. Hope this makes sense.

From your description, it sounds like this could be a reverse sneeze. These are not dangerous (unless it happens continuously, then we would need to look for a cause).
