My dog's lost toenail is healing. Precautions for walking or bathing?

The first picture looks like the nail may be loose and broken, this will likely fall off and regrow if this is the case and although it would be uncomfortable as when we lose a nail ourselves, they usually heal uneventfully if infection can be avoided

Hi, The most important thing is that it clotted and the bleeding stopped. He should be fine and the nail will GROW. Just monitor the area so it clean and no signs of infection such as pus, swelling, redness and prevent the dog from licking/biting or bothered with the toe in case he start doing it

Hi, provided the quick does not get infected, the nail will gradually grow back. I think just cleaning it and making sure it does not get infected will be enough. If you should notice any oozing or swelling/inflammation of the area, it could mean that the nail bed is getting infected and it is best to have Jaxon checked over. Also try to prevent Jaxon licking the wound. Hope this helps !

You can use both. A thin layer of iodine ointment will serve to help prevent infection. The Woun’ dres can be applied over it. If Caesar is likely to lick it, I recommend an e-collar. He may chew and eat a bandage if he isn’t wearing an e-collar. Bandages are also tricky because they can trap moisture and can tighten, cutting off circulation to the paw. I would continue applying both three times a day until the nail bed appears completely dry and scabbed over. You can place a toddler sock or a bootie over the paw when you take Caesar outside to pee and poop but I would avoid long walks for the next week. Good luck!

It should heal enough within 24-48 hours for it not to bleed again when exposed to moisture. You can put on a doggie bootie or even a toddler sock in the meantime for walks outside (remove it once Lola comes inside as moisture retained in the bootie or sock is not ideal either). If you have a bandage on still, be sure to check her toes every few hours to make sure that they are still warm/that the bandage is not too tight (sometimes they can tighten on their own and even cause the paw to swell). It’s likely not necessary but you can also try applying liquid bandage that can be found in most drug stores/pharmacies. (vet’s often use a different version as tissue/surgery glue.) Good luck!

Poor Paddt! Sometimes these nails need to be removed behind the break. It's hard to give you the best advice without being able to examined the nail. I recommend to have Paddt examined by the veterinarian. He should also be wearing an elizabethan collar at all times to prevent any licking since this could make the nail infected. The area should be kept clean and dry and the exercise should be severely restricted until the nail is healed (no walks, running or jumping). Poor guy. It looks like he has a toenail injury there. If there is no active bleeding, no signs of infection and doesn't seem to bother Newt, then you can keep an eye on this for now. There is a mild area of irritation on the pawpad, but you can just monitor it for now to see if this gradually improves with the steroid he is on. Steroids do have good anti-inflammatory effects and the enrofloxacin is a good antibiotic that should keep this from getting infected. I hope that things continue to improve with Newt's paw and toenail. I am not sure when that bandage was placed, but make sure to have it either removed completely or changed out after its been there for 24 hrs, especially if it was used to wrap the toe.
