My 5-year-old dog's scrotum is loose and swings. Is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The saggy nature of Leo's scrotum and testicles is just cosmetic and there is not medical worry. It is likely hereditary in nature. If you plan to neuter him the Vet can also fix the scrotum (scrotal ablation). Other wise there is nothing to do about it now. He does seem quite well endowed. If the testicles suddenly seem more enlarged then I would have him seen as he could have an infection, suffered trauma or if painful a torsion. I wish you the best

The picture does not show anything concerning but I would continue to monitor for any sweliing or discomfort which may indicate a painful infection or assymetry which can indicate a tumour. Rapid increase in size can occur with scrotal hernias which although rare are a surgical emergency.

When a dog, especially an older dog who's testicles have developed, is neutered, the scrotum (or the sack that the testicle is in) can have some empty space in it. This is completely normal and can get smaller with time, or stay the same. Unfortunately, Pokey absolutely must keep his collar on at all times, even when he is sleeping. The collar prevents him from biting or licking the area. Not only can he pull out his stitches and hurt himself, but he can actually cause the area to become infected. If he is not comfortable with the cone, you can get him a donut-shaped version that some dogs find more comfortable. It is very important that the collar stays on to avoid complications. The sac can be on the black side, it's not uncommon, but if it is very black and does not feel relatively smooth and elastic like the rest of the skin, then there might be a problem that will require you to take him to the vet.

Thank you for providing pictures of Blitiz! This looks normal, you can see the scrotal skin hanging loosely after removing the testes, and over time, the skin should tighten up. It looks like the area has healed just fine, there is nothing wrong :-)

It is not unusual for the scrotum to darken slightly with age, but I agree that this is a marked change. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon to make sure there are no signs of infection or cancer. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor Oscar! His scrotum does look quite swollen and sore. Yes, unfortunately this could definitely be caused by testicular cancer, as this is a fairly common problem in older intact male dogs. He could also have an infection of the scrotum or testicles causing this swelling. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked as soon as you are able to. He/she can take a biopsy if needed to help determine exactly what's going on, and may recommend surgical removal if cancer is suspected.
