Why is my dog having liquid stools while on prednisone medication?

Oh no, that isn't good. Prednisone can cause bleeding in the GI tract. This is very concerning, and you need to contact Milo's veterinarian immediately so they can advise you further, as they may want you start tapering down the medication. You can't just stop prednisone suddenly, it has to be tapered off, but pooping blood is serious. I would not give him anti-diarrhea medication, please either call his vet now or take him into his vet right away. I hope this helps.

They will ask you several questions and help to determine if the medication should be continued or if additional care is needed. There are a couple things you can do at home that may also help. A bland diet for 48 hours can help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A probiotic may also be beneficial. Purina carries a nice one called FortiFlora if you can find it. Your vet will also have a nice one as well. You can add additional water to her food to help prevent dehydration. No, I would not recommend doing this. Sidewinder has been on prednisone for quite a long time, and skipping days should not be done. He does have to be weaned off of it slowly, and I would not do this without veterinary supervision. I would try to wrap it in some cheese or peanut butter to get him to eat it. I would also have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. Long term prednisone use can cause GI ulcers, and that could be the cause of his bloody diarrhea. Because he's having bloody diarrhea and not eating, I would take him into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now. That vet can advise you on what to do with the prednisone as well (bring the bottle with you to the appointment).

Poor guy. Steroids can cause abnormal stools, so this is likely the culprit. Also his body is stressed, so loose stool is commonly seen. You can try giving him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet once his stools do return to normal. 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) can also be added to his food daily to help solidify his stools. If he still has loose stools after 48 hrs, then a repeat vet visit is likely needed to get him on something stronger. You should continue to give the Benadryl as instructed by your vet. Unfortunately, these are common side effects of prednisone - it often causes bloating, weight gain with a pot-bellied appearance, and in many cases seems to be make dogs more irritable. It may also cause increased thirst, urination, and appetite. I'm not sure what medical condition your dog has that the prednisone is treating, but I would recommend talking with your vet about your concerns - in many cases, there are altnerative medications such as Atopica or Apoquel for allergy problems, or azathioprine for immune-mediated illnesses, that can be just as effective and generally cause fewer side effects. It may be possible to reduce your dog's dose of prednisone or even taper off of it altogether if a different medication is used.

Maalox is not my first choice to fix diarrhea and vomiting. Doxycycline is an antibiotic notorious for causing tummy upset, regardless if you accidentally gave too much. High doses of steroids can cause tummy upset. Prednisone can not be abruptly stopped and needs to be weaned and in Chlyo's case is likely needed to save his life if he has immune mediated hemolytic anemia. There are other antibiotic choices to rule out tick borne disease causing his immune disease. My recommendations is to call your Vet and have Chlyo seen again today. If he was my patient I would use cerenia, metronidazole and have him on prilosec or famotidine (pepcid). I would not stop or wean the prednisone unless his red blood cell count was normal. I would temporarily stop the doxycycline until he is eating and the stool is better and consider amoxicillin instead. Poor Layla! Her vomiting may be caused by the antibiotics, which can cause nausea and in rare cases, constriction of the esophagus. Steroids (prednisone) can cause stomach ulcers and kidney issues in high, chronic doses. Unfortunately, the vomiting and lethargy can be caused by a number of other conditions, which can just be a coincidence, so I recommend having Layla seen as soon as possible to rule out things like intestinal obstructions or torsion.
