Why is my dog limping with a bleeding, warm paw after a hike?

Poor Rocky! He could have a foreign body in it such as a grass seed or foxtail, which would be hard to see or find. If there is pus present, then it is infected and he should see a vet first thing the morning. The infection will require oral antibiotics to treat it. Rest him tonight, and try soaking his paw in an Epsom salt bath to see if that gives him some temporary relief. I hope this helps!

Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

Ouch, poor Oakley! Gently wash his paw with warm water and antiseptic soap. Bandage it and put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Change the bandage daily and keep an eye out for signs of infection. They include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. If you see any of those signs, take him into the vet for antibiotics. He's limping because he is in pain, so rest him for now. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on leash only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medication. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. It sounds like Ruger could have traumatized his paw or may have an infection or a cyst there. It's not an emergency but I'd make an appointment to see your vet as sometimes they need systemic medications to get it to heal, since it's difficult to put topical medication on the paw.

If your dog is not bearing weight on the foot then this warrants a visit to the vet as the foot must be quite painful and the cut may be deep enough to need antibiotic treatment. The vet will determine this based on their exam.

Based on the injuries you are describing I would be concerned that Flick was hit by a car while he was loose. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have his injuries examined. He will likely need pain medication as well as some antibiotics to help his wounds heal. A lidocaine wound spray is ok for short term use as long as Flick doesn’t lick it off. I hope this helps. I woud soak the area in an espom salt bath 2-3times daily and leave open to the air to try and dry the skin; if redness and pain does not resolve within 48hours or he becomes more lame he will need to ab assessed for an nfection by your vet
