Why is my dog licking, swallowing, anxious, and not eating suddenly?

Likely he is upset by the ordeal and having had you pull the object from his mouth-I would give him a few hours and try rot see if he calms down enough to drink water. It is possible that in the removal process he received a scratch on the inside of his mouth, etc as well that has made it a bit uncomfortable for him. If he continues last morning not able to drink water comfortably-I would seek a veterinary visit so that they can do an oral exam-likely it will not come to this. I hope this helps!

He may have an esophageal foreign body, ulcers of stomach or esophagus or just acid reflex. I would discuss with Sky's vet if radiographs might help determine what is wrong. If the pepcid seemed to help, it may be that he needs to be on an acid reducer long term. There are other medications that may used longer term than the pepcid. I hope Sky is back to normal soon.

You are correct that his behavior can signify a problem with his mouth, such as severe dental disease or a broken tooth. There could even be something stuck in his mouth. Another cause is nausea. Since Biscuit has eaten and gone to the bathroom he should be fine until the morning. Try to get get him to drink more fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated and to soothe his throat. I would put a little chicken broth or bullion in some water to encourage him to drink. You also can add some water to his food. It sounds like he has a sore throat or is coming down with a cold. If he chewed up a toy or bone he may have a throat injury but if it was severe he wouldn't eat. Your veterinarian will examine his mouth and will get him the appropriate medication. Please keep an eye on him tonight and if he should get a lot worse then I would take him in to be checked out. Licking the lips can sometimes be a sign of nervousness, nausea, or even an issue with the teeth or mouth. If he hasn't had a dental cleaning recently, tartar on the teeth or gums could be causing some irritation and thus the licking behavior. Nausea such as from minor GI upset, may also cause drooling, or have signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, but this is not always the case. If it continues or you see any signs of illness/smell bad breath, etc, having your vet take a look is best. If you've changed something in his environment around the time the licking started (new pet, people, items in the house, etc) it could be that he's feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable as well. Making sure he gets some extra attention and the cause of the nervousness is addressed (IE making sure he has someplace to go rest and hide, using a pheromone diffuser, etc) may help.

Hello, sorry to hear about Karl. It sounds like he may have increased thirst and is looking for more water (licking the air, eating snow, not eating but drinking). This could be associated with a form of kidney disease. Alternatively, the air licking and excessive drooling could be an indication that something is abnormal within his mouth (tooth root abscess, salivary gland abscess, or even a mouth mass). This can usually cause dogs to not want to eat, or they may prefer to eat softer foods, but still be able to drink. You may look in his mouth and see if you note anything obvious, but ultimately, he may need be thoroughly evaluated by a veterinarian to look for any diseases within his mouth or his kidneys. Another reason for dogs to not want to eat and cause them to eat grass could include any GI disease such as a dietary indiscretion. This however tends to also carry signs of vomiting and/or diarrhea. If Karl is not getting better, then have him evaluated by your veterinarian promptly. Hope this helps and best of luck.
