My dog is sick, won't eat, licks air, drools, and eats snow. Why?

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Drooling can be a sign of nausea which may in turn be causing the decreased appetite. I recommend that you have Hank evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It sounds like Lucky is sick. Losing teeth indicates serious dental disease and this can lead to several other disease processes. Dental disease is often painful and could also be a reason he is not eating well in general although not eating is also a sign of many disease conditions. Additionally, drinking lots of water is concerning for something like kidney disease, diabetes, endocrine disease or an infection. Urinating in the house can also be related to kidney disease, a bladder infection, diabetes or Cushing's Disease. Lucky needs to see his veterinarian very soon (ideally within the next few days) and the doctor will likely need to run bloodwork and a urinalysis to check for signs of disease or infection. The doctor can also discuss a dental cleaning and extractions of diseased teeth. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions!

Shepphard could be nauseous or have a dental problem causing the excessive salivation, and eating grass can also indicate nausea. The cloudy eye could be due to cataracts. It's very conquering that he won't eat his food. I'd have him seen by a vet now to get this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Hello. I am sorry that Zeus isn't feeling well. Hard swallowing/licking can be a sign of nausea and an upset stomach. Eating grass and fur is also a sign of an upset stomach. It is not surprising that he did this on a raw food diet (especially if there were bones) as this often causes gastritis. Now that he is on a kibble he is likely feeling much better most of the time. If he is having another episode now, it could be that he is having a bit of gastritis again. It is firstly important to make sure he doesn't have something stuck in his esophagus, this can be done with an x-ray. Alternatively, at home you can feed him some boiled boneless chicken, and see if he will eat it and not vomit or regurgitate it back up. As a general rule, if they eat food and it stays down for an hour it is unlikely to have an esophageal blockage. If you feed some food and Zeus either regurgitates/vomits/or does not want to eat the treat, I would recommend a visit to the vet. If Zeus is eating, and not vomiting, and is otherwise bright and happy, a simple gastritis can usually be treated at home with boiled boneless/skinless/chicken breasts, and boiled rice, in small frequent meals for 2 days, and then re-introduce his kibble slowly. At any time if there is vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, or inappetance, I would recommend a visit to the vet ASAP for radiographs, possible bloodwork, and possible hospitalization and treatment depending on what they find. If your dog hasn't eaten in a week, there is something very gravely wrong with him and he needs to see a vet right away. He may have an infection, or cancer, or have swallowed something stuck in his gastrointestinal tract, or any number of serious things going on. You need to take him in to see a vet as soon as possible.

He may have picked up something like a toad or insect that tastes bad and gotten a toxin in his mouth causing the behavior you are describing. Make sure he’s drinking water as that will rinse out the mouth. If he won’t drink that try chicken broth. If he continues not to eat then I’m concerned and recommend a veterinary exam. He needs to see a vet if at all possible. His symptoms are very vague and not specific for one particular illness or disease. I cannot tell you how to treat him at home without knowing why he is sick. You really need to find a way for him to see a vet.
