My puppy swallowed, now can't lick or drink. Vet or anxiety?

He may have picked up something like a toad or insect that tastes bad and gotten a toxin in his mouth causing the behavior you are describing. Make sure he’s drinking water as that will rinse out the mouth. If he won’t drink that try chicken broth. If he continues not to eat then I’m concerned and recommend a veterinary exam. He likely knocked his throat hard enough that eating or swallowing is irritating the vagus nerve and causes retching. You should monitor this and if it does not get better by tomorrow or if he has breathing problems, he will need to be seen by a veterinarian or at a petER. In the case of respiratory problems this is an emergency and he needs to be seen right away.

I am so sorry this has happened to Babyboy. If he is still lethargic and not eating I would recommend taking him to the veterinarian. I urge caution when pouring water down dogs mouths as they can aspirate. I would also check his temperature to make sure he isn't too hot especially with the recent heat. It does sound from your description like something is bothering Casper's throat, but the only way to know what's wrong and make sure we're giving Casper the help he needs is to have a vet take a look. If there's an infection, he'll need antibiotics. If there's an injury or some other issue, it needs to be identified before he can be helped. So, I recommend you make an appointment for Casper to be examined by a vet as soon as possible. In the meantime, if mashed up puppy food is what he'll eat, then keep offering that to him several times a day. You can add some water to make it a slurry, both to make it easier for him to eat, and to help supplement with fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!

Since Biscuit has eaten and gone to the bathroom he should be fine until the morning. Try to get get him to drink more fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated and to soothe his throat. I would put a little chicken broth or bullion in some water to encourage him to drink. You also can add some water to his food. It sounds like he has a sore throat or is coming down with a cold. If he chewed up a toy or bone he may have a throat injury but if it was severe he wouldn't eat. Your veterinarian will examine his mouth and will get him the appropriate medication. Please keep an eye on him tonight and if he should get a lot worse then I would take him in to be checked out.
