My dog is licking and swallowing non-stop. Should I take him to ER?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 35 lbs

My dog keeps licking and swallowing non-stop. He's eaten and went to the bathroom. His gums look a little pale. Should I take him to the ER tonight or is this something that could wait until the vet opens in the morning? He's about 35 pounds, cocker spaniel/shar-pei mix, 3 years old.

Since Biscuit has eaten and gone to the bathroom he should be fine until the morning. Try to get get him to drink more fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated and to soothe his throat. I would put a little chicken broth or bullion in some water to encourage him to drink. You also can add some water to his food. It sounds like he has a sore throat or is coming down with a cold. If he chewed up a toy or bone he may have a throat injury but if it was severe he wouldn't eat. Your veterinarian will examine his mouth and will get him the appropriate medication. Please keep an eye on him tonight and if he should get a lot worse then I would take him in to be checked out. He may have picked up something like a toad or insect that tastes bad and gotten a toxin in his mouth causing the behavior you are describing. Make sure he’s drinking water as that will rinse out the mouth. If he won’t drink that try chicken broth. If he continues not to eat then I’m concerned and recommend a veterinary exam. My 4-month puppy is unbalanced, vomiting, and drooling. What should I do?

This sounds serious. It almost sounds like Biscuit may have had a type of seizure episode and drooling is a sign of nausea. Another possibility is a toxin ingestion leading to abnormal neurological signs. At any rate Biscuit should really see a vet to be evaluated right away. If he did invest a toxin, he will need to be detoxed to help rid the toxin and help stabilize his condition. If he had a seizure, then bloodwork analysis should be done to look for underlying causes and medicaitons to help stabilize him. Best of luck with your pet Biscuit. I hope he gets wel soon. My dog is licking his mouth a lot and has a stuffy nose. Is he sick?

I am sorry to hear that Ace is not himself. Increased Licking and salvation can be signs of nausea. It sounds possible that Ace be have a gastrointestinal infection. I would advise the following; Bland diet of boiled chicken breast and white rice for three days. If diarrhoea or vomiting begin, Ace seems lethargic or in pain, he does not start to improve over tbhe next few days, take him to the veterinarian immediately. My dog keeps swallowing repeatedly and licking the floor, is she sick?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Roxy. This repeated swallowing and licking can be signs of nausea. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If this behavior continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My dog suddenly licks everything and has a fever. What should I do?

Licking things is most commonly associated with nausea. I can't easily make that related to a heart murmur, so probably something new going on. I'd feed her a bland diet tonight (boiled chicken and rice) and take her in if the licking continues tomorrow. If it seems obsessive, take a video, and go today.

My puppy swallowed, now can't lick or drink. Vet or anxiety?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Likely he is upset by the ordeal and having had you pull the object from his mouth-I would give him a few hours and try rot see if he calms down enough to drink water. It is possible that in the removal process he received a scratch on the inside of his mouth, etc as well that has made it a bit uncomfortable for him. If he continues last morning not able to drink water comfortably-I would seek a veterinary visit so that they can do an oral exam-likely it will not come to this. I hope this helps!
