Why is my dog constantly licking his lips like he's trying to swallow?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 3 months old | 16 lbs

For several months, my 12 year old Male Maltese dog has been frequently licking his lips as though he is trying to swallow something even when he has not been drinking or eating. This occurs day and night. He received shots six months ago and is in good health. He went through a period of licking his paws and back about two months ago until we used stop itch spray with good results. What could be the cause of the licking his lips? I can’t feel any obstruction in his throat but it is sensitive.

Licking the lips can sometimes be a sign of nervousness, nausea, or even an issue with the teeth or mouth. If he hasn't had a dental cleaning recently, tartar on the teeth or gums could be causing some irritation and thus the licking behavior. Nausea such as from minor GI upset, may also cause drooling, or have signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, but this is not always the case. If it continues or you see any signs of illness/smell bad breath, etc, having your vet take a look is best.

If you've changed something in his environment around the time the licking started (new pet, people, items in the house, etc) it could be that he's feeling a bit nervous or uncomfortable as well. Making sure he gets some extra attention and the cause of the nervousness is addressed (IE making sure he has someplace to go rest and hide, using a pheromone diffuser, etc) may help.

    Some dogs do seem to lick more than others and the cause is not known at this time. Certainly breeds like Shih Tzus can get hair stuck in the mouth and lips which can cause licking. You may try keeping the facial hair very short.
    You may also try feeding a diet such as Royal Canin as it is fortified with supplements to keep the surfaces of the skin healthy (both in the mouth and elsewhere).
    You may also encourage him to drink water or add water to the food to make sure his oral cavity remains moist.
    It’s likybthe veterinarian has checked his mouth for any abnormalities but you may have this done as well.
    Otherwise ignore the behavior.

Licking lips can be a sign of nausea in dogs, and that could be what's causing Fendi to do this behavior. Given that she is otherwise acting normal, I would monitor her for now. If she is still acting this way in the morning, or develops other symptoms such as vomiting and lethargy, I would have her seen by a vet.

Chronic licking is a common sign of nausea, as well as hypersalivation. Nausea can be caused by many conditions such as dietary indiscretion (eating things Bella shouldn't be), intestinal parasites, foreign bodies, and pancreatitis. If Bella is consistently doing this, it is worth it to rule out the conditions above. Your vet may recommend bloodwork, x-rays, and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Constant licking of the lips is usually either a sign of nausea or a sign of dental disease, you should take him to the vet and get it checked, first the mouth then if nothing is found a blood test to try and discover what could be causing the nausea.

Swallowing a lot and licking lips is due to nausea. Bloat is very uncommon in a small breed dog like a Chihuahua so that is not likely to be the cause. I suggest you have Junior examined by your vet as nausea is a very vague symptom and not specific for any one disease process or illness.

My dog is foaming at the mouth and licking his lips. Is it serious?
No, this isn't normal. Foaming around the mouth can be a sign of nausea, poisoning, difficulty swallowing, poor dental hygiene, and even rabies. If Tucky is vaccinated for rabies, then it is extremely unlikely that would be a cause of the hyper salivation. Licking the lips is also a sign of nausea. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he continues to foam at the mouth in the absence of food, on the bland diet, or becomes lethargic he will need to see a vet.

Why is my dog hiccuping, smacking lips, and won't open his mouth?
It sounds like Nene may be feeling a bit nauseated or anxious. This can cause symptoms such as burping/hiccuping, licking lips, drooling, etc. Causes can be anything from GI upset, to illness, bloat, or even something stuck in the mouth or throat. If he won't let you examine his mouth at all and is refusing to eat or drink, seems painful, or in distress, having him examined by a vet ASAP is best to rule out more serious issues.

This is usually a sign of nausea, which should be ideally checked as it could be compatible with a chronic type of inflammation. Considering her age, a physical examination and possibly more investigations (like an abdominal ultrasound of her abdomen) would be ideal.
