My dog is lethargic and sad 2 weeks after deworming. What to do?

Gave my dog 2 worming tablets 2 weeks ago she is very lethargic she is eating but she isn’t active just sleeping curled up not greeting anyone at the door just looks sad

Hello, thank you for your question about Sandi.

Lethargy is a nonspecific symptom, meaning that it could be a sign of many different underlying conditions. She could have a systemic infection or other condition. I think it is unlikely that her lethargy is related to the deworming tablets, since those were given 2 weeks ago and usually symptoms develop shortly after ingestion.

I would recommend having Sandi seen by a veterinarian so that they can perform an examination and discuss the need for additional diagnostics. They may recommend performing bloodwork.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Marley has been feeling off. Were the tablets prescribed by a veterinarian or over the counter? Depending on the medications in them, it could be causing GI upset. It could all be secondary to the intestinal parasites, or it could be due to something else entirely (dietary indiscretion, infection, foreign material ingestion, or another underlying issue). As it has been several days, I would recommend having Marley evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if there is something going on that needs to be addressed in order to get him back to his usual self. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, Khaleesi is too young to receive vaccinations. Typically vaccines are first given when the puppy is 8 weeks old. The dewormer for roundworms (if it was pyrantel) is given orally once every 2 weeks 3-4 times. Sometimes puppies that have a roundworm infection may become lethargic. Lethargy in puppies can be caused by a variety of other medical conditions as well including viral infections. If Khaleesi is lethargic, not eating, and just not herself, my best advice is to have her seen by her veterinarian for an exam just to be sure there is nothing else more concerning going on that would cause or contribute to her lethargy. My dog is still lethargic after whipworm treatment. Is this normal?

For most dogs, symptoms of whipworm would be diarrhea possibly with blood in it, but I wouldn't expect lethargy unless she has so many whipworms that she's anemia. I would recommend letting your vet know this is going on -- they may want her to come back in for evaluation. I'm concerned something else could be going on totally unrelated to the whipworms.

Is it okay to deworm a dog that is still feeling sick or lethargic?

I would not deworm him when he is not feeling well unless you have a specific diagnosis that he needs the dewormer (example: a fecal test was run and you know he has roundworms). I would wait until he is feeling better.

I am sorry to hear about Leia! If you feel she is really lethargic then I would recommend bringing her in to the vet for an exam. Lethargy is a very vague symptom so there are many different possible causes, but your vet can do a physical examination to try to narrow down the possiblities for her lethargy. This in combination with a good history and sometimes labwork will help pinpoint the cause of her lethargy and how best to treat the condition.

My dog has worms and is lethargic with no appetite. What should I do?

Deworming productions I recommend include Panacur and Drontal, both of which you can get from the vet. Panacur kills roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms, while Drontal kills those worms in addition to tapeworms. Drontal is a prescription only deworming treatment. Given that Prada Jean doesn't have an appetite and is very lethargic, I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what kind of worms she has in her stool and the best deworming medication for her. It's important for her to see a vet because she is having the other symptoms you are describing, she sounds unwell at the moment. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor Kai! I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling well and I understand your concern! In some puppies with a significant burden of roundworms, vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a means of expelling the worms. This also can cause inappetence from nausea and mild lethargy as a result. Although rare, intussusception (essentially intestines that telescope into one another) can occur in cases of parasitism, which can cause vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. At this point, monitor Kai for changes tonight and try to tempt him to eat with boiled white meat chicken and white rice as a bland diet. If he is still lethargic and not eating by the morning, he should be examined by his vet. The greatest likelihood is simply that his body is working to expel the roundworms.

I'm very sorry Sadie isn't feeling well! I can understand they you might be worried, but it is a good sign that she is eating every meal and drinking water. Lethargy is a very general sign of illness, and it can be caused by many different things such as systemic illness, infection, injury, or inflammation. I would monitor her for now, and if she is still lethargic in 24-48 hours, I would take her into the vet for a health check.
