My dog leaves wet spots when lying down. Should I see a vet?

Some females will develop incontinence after the spay. This does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and I do recommend to have Amber visit her veterinarian. The doctor will check her for a bladder infection and if that is clear they will discuss starting her on a medication to tighten the sphincter. This will likely stop the incontinence. The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. A visit to the vet should help you sort out the cause and hopefully get Sassy acting more like herself. I hope this was helpful!

This can be from a hormonal imbalance due to being spayed. If this becomes more frequent there is medication to control the urinary incontinence. They will recommend a urinalysis to make sure there is no medical problem in the urine then they can prescribe medication. Usually a low dose of medication needs to be given lifelong. No, I don't think it is an emergency but she should see a vet when you can make a regular appointment. My best guess is that she has urinary incontinence. Common in spayed female dogs (especially large breeds) and there is medication that can help them if the problem becomes very frequent. Usually incontinence can be due to an infection in the bladder, in this case the urine is usually quite drak and smelly. You can have it tested by a vet and treated accordingly. Alternatively in an older dog it can be due to incompetence of the sphnincter muscle, medications can help this. Other reasons can be hormonal issues or kidney problems. Neurological conditions are rare and tend to be associated with trauma and other signs such as paralysis. I would get her checked by her vet if it persists but leave any major treatment to her owners.

Constantly leaking urine is most concerning of incontinence, but I'm almost certain that this would have been noticed while in the shelter and the dog would not have been adopted if this was discovered. More likely, this is a recent urinary infection that happened to occur around adoption time. The SPCA is usually good at offering free vet services within two weeks of adoption.
