My female dog is dripping clear liquid. Is it urinary incontinence?

If your elderly dog has vaginal bleeding you should have her seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible because that is not normal. If she has not been spayed it could be a sign of a uterus infection called pyometra which can be fatal if not treated immediately. Also it could be possible that she has blood in her urine which could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or possibly stones. If she worsens in any way, becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, or starts bleeding more, you should have her seen by a veterinarian immediately.

She likely is having some urinary incontinence. I would try to collect some of the fluid and taking it to your vet for analysis to be certain. You have to collect a good amount of it however, so get a syringe from your vet if needed and try to collect at least 1-2 mls of fluid. If she is having some incontinence then you can discuss with your vet about getting her on medication to help her retain her urine and keep it in her bladder. She may have a very serious uterine infection called a pyometra or a very serious urinary tract infection from your description and that picture. A pyometra is life threatening and requires antibiotics and often surgery to treat so I would get Belle to a veterinarian to be examined as soon as possible.

We can have dogs get infections of bacteria or yeast in the vulva area, but we can also see this symptom as a sign of a urinary tract infection or some urinary incontinence. Your vet can examine her and check for signs of infection, and based on their findings make a treatment plan. Your post states that your dog is spayed, if she was not spayed we would also be concerned about the chance of a pyometra, or infected uterus, which would need to be seen right away.

We see sometimes urine incontinence after neutering, but this is related to drop in hormones level resulting in weak urethral sphincter. Please, monitor Ellie at home for the next 24-48hrs. If she has more accidents, you should take her to your local vets. Please, take a urine sample with you, if possible, - it would be the best initial diagnostic test for Ellie.

The most likely fluid in a spayed female dog would be urine. When a dog dribbles urine or leaves spots of urine on the bedding I often think about urinary tract infections. Older dogs can also develop urinary sphyncter incompetence (or a weak sphyncter), making it difficult for them to hold their bladder overnight. There are also less common causes, for instance bladder stones or endocrine diseases. Your veterinarian will likely offer to run a urinalysis, a urine culture, and maybe some bloodwork on Sassy to determine what might be causing the urine leaking. There are antibiotics we use for urinary tract infections and if it appears to be loss of bladder control there are medications to help with that as well. A visit to the vet should help you sort out the cause and hopefully get Sassy acting more like herself. I hope this was helpful!
