My dog pees uncontrollably when standing up. Is it neurological?

Fecal incontinence is usually neurological as long as it is not diarrhea which can be due to food allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, or chronic stress colitis. Royal Canin GI dry and canned food may help decrease the volume of stool and is likely the best option for the fecal incontinence which is usually not treatable. Peeing all the time can be caused by renal disease, diabetes, cushings’s disease /hyperadrenocorticism or a UTI. Having a full CBC/Chem/Fructosamine bloodwork panel run + a Urinalysis and Urine Protein Creatinine ratio at another vet’s is an option to rule out these causes of the polyuria which can be managed with medications. It sounds like your dog is suffering from incontinence. This can be caused by infection, stress, excessive thirst, problems with the spinal cord, or a weakened bladder. I would have him seen by a vet for this problem. There are medications that can be given to him to treat this problem depending on the cause of the incontinence. The vet can diagnose the cause of the incontinence, and can treat him for it.

It could actually be spay incontinence. Lack of estrogen may cause the urethral sphincter (a muscle used to control the exit of urine) to relax and release urine involuntarily. This can be treated with medication. I'd have Coco seen by a vet for this issue.

It sounds like Blacky had a urinary tract infection, which sometimes can become recurrent or resistant and difficult to treat. His urine may need to be cultured again to see if the infection has resolved. Sometimes bladder stones or polyps, or diseases like Cushing's or kidney disease could also cause urine leakage. Finally, he may have urinary incontinence due to a neurologic issue and require medication to help stop the leakage. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see if there are any additional tests they would recommend.

Hello. He may have a urinary tract infection, but this may also be a neurological issue, too, perhaps the beginning of a compressed disc. Have your vet take a look & make sure they do a neurological exam & test his placing reflexes especially with his hind legs. Sudden changes in behavior can sometimes signal a health issue, and accidents in an elderly dog can be caused by a number of things. Bladder infections can cause sudden accidents in the house, while changes to the muscles and nerves around the bladder may lead to incontinence-type accidents with dribbling or small puddles happening. Cognitive changes in elderly dogs (similar to human dementia) can also sometimes cause a pet to "forget" their training such as potty training, leading to accidents. It is a good idea to schedule a veterinary exam to see if any of these could be a possible cause and to find a treatment plan that helps.
