Dog leaning, stumbling, and struggling to stand. What's wrong?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Bella! Causes for scooting/dragging bottom are: full/impacted or infected anal glands, itchy bottom, stool stuck to the anus and sometimes worms. Causes of bloody and mucousy stool and a decreased appetite are many: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. If she is on monthly heart worm prevention it also is a monthly dewormer making worms less likely. The only way to know for sure is to drop a stool sample off at your vet to have it tested. I can't tell if what is in her stool is worms or strings of mucous. I would start Bella on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Check er bottom for hanging pieces of feces. if she continues to scoot then she should have her anal glands checked. Below is a link to a good general dewormer. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to parasites. Keep in mind that not improving with a dewormer does not mean is not parasites. It may mean you are using the wrong dewormer or the wrong amount or longevity. This can also be a number of other things like a foreign body obstruction, parvovirus, among other causes. I would recommend you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and start therapy accordingly. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Peter! How old is Peter? The most common condition that causes trouble walking, falling over, head tilt and trembling is Vestibular disease. This is a problem with the balance center in either the brain or the inner ear. Possible causes are an ear infection, stroke, low thyroid, a brain tumor or if he is just old it can be idiopathic (meaning we don't know why). I have seen dogs become Vestibular and then be normal that quickly, though usually the signs can persist for up to 2 weeks. I am not sure about the relation to the food you are feeding. If he shows the symptoms again I would immediately take him to your Vet for an exam. Consider video taping it so you can show them in case it goes away quickly again. Based on your description I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Buzz so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may be standing differently due to abdominal pain or if her butt and tail are in a different position, she may have an anal gland issue. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Beba could be feeling weak. How serious depends on what it is. For example, this can go from just her being really tired to her being ill. Some things that can cause weakness include anemia, inflammatory conditions, among other possibilities. If she is otherwise doing well (eating and drinking well, etc) I recommend that you continue to watch her closely. If this behavior continues by tomorrow, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If she worsens tonight then definitely have her examined before. Good luck! Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Bella. I would recommend that she is examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. She is having persistent neurologic signs and there may be others that you cannot detect but that can be determined by an examination from a doctor. These are all important findings to determine the origin of this problem. I know that you mention toxin is not possibly but we commonly see pets that have ingested a toxin that was unknown to the owner. Infectious and inflammatory disease are other possibilities for the cause of these problems for Bella. It is best to have her checked out before her symptoms worsen. Best of luck to Bella.
