Dog's belly is big, no appetite, and tired. Dewormer didn't help.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies tend to have a more bloated belly. Intestinal parasites are usually the main cause of this. Sometimes the intestines are more gassy in puppies too. I would give the dewormer some more time. If there is no improvement by a week i would have her examined and bring a stool sample with you. Sometimes changing puppy food can help as well. She is due for vaccinations so a Vet exam should be happening soon anyway. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree that a heavy worm burden can cause what you’re describing. In fact, it is the most likely reason. You can try an over the counter cat dewormer from a pet store. Follow the directions exactly in terms of amount and number of treatments. Hopefully, that’s all it takes to get her feeling better. Unfortunately, there are other (much less common) things that can cause large belly, weight loss, and lethargy including: FIP, heart failure, liver failure, cancer, protein problems, etc. So, if the dewormer doesn’t help, you may have to decide if you’d want to take her to the vet for further testing or if you’d like her humanely euthanized, etc. Best wishes and thank you so much for taking care of this stray!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear Brewster isn’t feeling well. The eggs from parasites are microscopic so it is unlikely to see with with a naked eye. Also, not all dewormer treat every parasite dogs can get. Because he has made no improvement with your treatment, I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam and further therapy. Although he is drinking water, he may not be taking in enough orally to replenish what is lost in the diarrhea, therefore causing dehydration. He will likely need radiography to find out why his stomach is distended. They can also check a stool sample for intestinal parasites. If anything they should be able to get him medications to stop the diarrhea and help him feel better. Good luck and kisses to Brewster!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It does not sound as if Twix is showing symptoms of being sick based on your description. I would bring a fecal sample of Twix's to his veterinarian to ensure that he is clear of intesti nal parasites. Sometimes when puppies engorged themselves on food the belly can become large. To be safe, I would have the stool checked for problems and have Twix examined. Make sure he is not eating too much food to cause his belly to enlarge. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies should be dewormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age to about 10 weeks of age. She can still have worms. But in general puppies of Bella's age tend to have fat little distended bellies, just like human babies, which is very normal. They tend to look even fuller after eating. It is time to start her vaccinations so the Vet can also feel her belly to be sure everything is fine. I wish Bella the best!
