Why is my dog avoiding the kerosene heater? Are fumes dangerous?

I would be cautious with letting Snow lay directly in front of the gas heater as this could lead to serious burns or his fur catching fire if he sleeps too close to the heater. I would make sure that he at least 5 feet from the heater and make sure he cannot get any closer. I have had several patients (dogs and cats) come in with burns from gas heaters. I hope this helps! I would be worried that maybe she drank some, or something else from a garage. I recommend having her to a vet right away as Nancy could have a toxicity issue. Poor babies! This is most likely due to the stress of the situation. You can take them out to get some fresh air if you are concerned about the carbon monoxide. If they were truly affected by the gas then you would also be feeling it. These detectors are SO loud to us - they are even louder to dogs. Give them some time to calm down. If they continue to be in distressed or if they are ever labored breathing then I would have your vet take a look at them. I hope this helps!

I think if you keep Bailey out of the room during the hair dying process, use good ventilation and then do not allow her back in that room until the smell is gone if good enough. I can't imagine her coughing from just smelling your hair so I do not think you need to avoid her. Have a great day!

Similar to humans, fumes can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. If the ventilation was appropriate enough that you were comfortable then likely your dog was too. If you were wearing a mask then your dog probably should not be in that area. Watch for any coughing or difficulty breathing. Most chemicals include warnings against breathing in the fumes, even inadvertently, as they typically recommend that they are only used in well-ventilated areas. If you can smell the fumes from these chemicals in your laundry room, it's likely that Timo is also breathing them in. Different chemicals can cause different toxicities, but most/all can cause some problems, particularly if they are inhaled on a regular basis. As long as you are certain that Timo could not have ingested or touched any of the chemicals, is eating, drinking and acting normally, without any coughing or breathing concerns, you shouldn't need to seek out emergency veterinary care at this time. (Obviously, if he is doing any of those things, emergency veterinary care is needed urgently!) Otherwise, be sure to remove these chemicals from the laundry room so that they are stored in an area where no one (Timo or a person) can breathe in these fumes.
