My dog inhaled strong air freshener fumes. Could it cause damage?

I would be concerned that she jumped because she fractured a tooth or injured herself on the can. She may have just been startled. A small amount of air freshener is likely to be bitter and may cause besides and vomiting. I recommend keeping a close eye on Marley. She should be seen by a vet if you think she is painful in the mouth (hypersalivating, guarding, etc) or is vomiting or lethargic. I hope this helps and that all is well with Marley!

Similar to humans, fumes can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. If the ventilation was appropriate enough that you were comfortable then likely your dog was too. If you were wearing a mask then your dog probably should not be in that area. Watch for any coughing or difficulty breathing. Most air fresheners aren’t toxic to dogs and I wouldn’t have any worries unless Bentley has chronic bronchitis, collapsing trachea or another airway disease. In this case you should avoid all air fresheners. Watch for coughing.

If toy do not believe there was anything in the box then I would monitor Casper for now. If you notice any symptoms such as lethargy, inappetance, vomiting or diarrhea, I would get him in to be examined by a veterinarian for further testing. I do not think you have to worry much. Even if your dog had ingested some of the perfume, there is not enough alcohol to hurt her. However her sense of smell may be impaired for a few hours.
