My dogs are distressed after CO alarm. Is it gas or just the noise?

Crazy dogs! :) If they are acting okay and not coughing or walking funny then they are probably okay. I would make sure their gums are pink and not blue, purple, or white. Also watch them closely for any labored breathing. If you are worried or just unsure about how they are, it never hurts to have at least an exam done on them to make sure they are okay. I obviously cannot see them so I cannot say for sure one way or the other. I hope this helps!

Serious carbon monoxide poisoning can cause blue/grey gums, increased breathing/gasping or extreme lethargy. If an alarm went off, the people and the animals were removed from the house, the problem fixed, and the house aired-out, there is little concern. If your puppy is eating, playing, and has pink gums, I would not be concerned. Unless there was severe hypoxia (oxygen starvation) to the brain - requiring hospitalization or blood transfusion, I do not expect any long term effects for Sky. However, if this continues, other possibilities like a respiratory condition should be considered. Air conditioning units work by condensing the air which causes it to lose moisture which in turn makes it a lot drier. This will often cause coughing as it is more irritant to the airway, and it can contribute to chest infections. I would consider using it less often or letting the dogs spend more time outside. If they continue coughing it could be an infection so go to the vet.

If your cats are acting normally at this time there should be nothing to worry about. Continue to monitor them closely and keep the windows open and fans on if you can. If you notice any symptoms such as neurological changes/mentation change, lethargy or vomiting, then you may want to have them checked out. Wally most likely was just scared of the loud sound. If he is acting normal now, then it is unlikely there is physical damage. The safest bet would be to take Graham to the vet or to a veterinary ER as any respiratory issues are especially concerning in brachycephalic breeds (including pug mixes) that have compromised airways due to their anatomy. Smoke inhalation can be very serious in dogs (as well as all animals and humans), resulting in inflammation of their airways. Many chemicals in smoke can also cause airways damage. Your vet/ER vet may recommend keeping him in an oxygen cage and administering steroids and/or bronchdiators until he is breathing normally again. I would definitely keep him inside until you are able to bring him to the vet. Good luck!
