My dog just had puppies. Why does she jump on my bed at night?

Get a baby gate to confine her to them or place them in a room. She wants to be included and if she is used to sleeping in your bed, this her solution to keep things normal and still take care of the babies. You will have to find a way to keep the puppies off the bed and restrict the mom's activity to do this for their safety.

Sometimes mamas will separate a puppy that is not doing well, so if this puppy seems smaller than the others or isn’t eating as well I’d recommend having it examined by your vet. It could also be a behavior quirk of hers, sonif the puppy seems normal otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much.

You may have to keep the puppies in a warm box next to her that she can't fit into and give them to her a few at a time every few hours to nurse. Once they get a little bigger, they should have no trouble staying out of her way. I'd be more worried that these puppies are sick or not nursing enough or not thriving in some way, and not actually getting squashed by mom. (This is common in pigs, not dogs). Make sure the pups are gaining a few ounces every day in weight and they should be ok.

Precious may be too hot on the bed, or she may have found another place she prefers to sleep that feels more secure. Cats often share the care of their babies with other cats. SO I am afraid you are going to have to put a box into your bed room where she can be with you and her babies. If she already has a box where she suckles her babies, then just move that one. Cat mamas are very very clean and there will be no smell or dirt, and the only thing you may hear at night will be purring....that in itself is a wonderful way of falling asleep. I hope this helps. By all means, do not let her get into the habit of sleeping in your bed with you. Dogs are creatures of habit, and if for some reason she has to sleep somewhere else (if you are in the hospital, for example), she will not understand the change and may start some undesirable behaviors.
