My dog just had puppies. Why does she jump on my bed at night?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

My dog gave birth four days ago. For some reason the mom will get out the bed, will jump on my bed while I’m sleeping and wake me up. She’ll be there for five seconds then go back to her puppy. Do you know why she’s doing this because I have no clue?

It could just be that Mimi trusts you and wants you to be there with her and her puppies. Moving the puppies and whelping box closer to you may help make Mimi feel a bit more comfortable and let you sleep. If you suspect Mimi or any of the puppies may be ill and she is trying to alert you to this, seeking veterinary care in person is best.
