My cat just had kittens, is clingy, brings them to my bed. What to do?

Unfortunately, when a momma cat feels someplace is safe, she'll be pretty adamant about bringing her kittens there! Apparently, the bed, and you are her safe spot. You may try making a "nest" for her out of pillows or a blanket from your bed and placing it next to the bed so it smells safe like you, but you can't crush it. You can also try making a pillow "wall" to keep yourself separated from the babies as well if you roll over in the night. Otherwise, just trying to make someplace else more enticing should encourage her to move them again.

I would put Mamma in her own room with the kittens and give them as much space as possible. Make sure she has food, water, and a litter box. Check on them only once a day to make sure things are going well with her and her kittens. It sounds like you may be a bit of a distraction for her, so leaving her alone with the kittens and having them be her only focus may help with this situation. I hope this helps!

It's pretty common for cats with new litters to have a different idea of where they'd like to nest from what we planned for them! You may not be able to make her stay in her box, but you can make it as appealing to her as possible. Make sure it's in a quiet, private corner where she feels safe and protected, and have clean soft bedding inside. She may or may not choose to use it. You will probably need to physically keep her out of your room with a barrier if she's not allowed in there, and beyond that she will decide where she's going to be comfortable keeping her kittens. Once she chooses a spot, make sure she's got access to fresh food and water nearby. Hope this helps! :-)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She could very well be moving the kittens- it’s quite common for them to move their kittens frequently. A hands-off approach works best. Provide access to quiet dark areas (open an empty cabinet, closets, etc). Keep an eye on her and know where she is currently nesting but don’t hover. It is ok that she is bringing them to you. They often move them to keep the safe and protect them. As long as she lays with them to keep them warm and fed it is fine. I would however take them off the bed and keep them on level ground because they can migrate and crawl and we do not want them falling off. They can begin to be weaned between 4-6 weeks of age

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bissy feels for some reason that her kittens are not safe. I would get Bissy and the kittens and put them in a spare bedroom closet. Use a laundry basket, cardboard box or a large dog carrier with towels. Put her food, water and litter box in the room. Keep people, other animals and children away from the kittens. Have one person she is close with check and weigh the kittens daily. Also keep the bedding clean. In a week or 2 start socializing the kittens and see if you can let Bissy out of the room. I wish you the best!

Sometimes it could mean there is something wrong with that kitten, but if Nylah is staying with it, she may be just protective of it. You should make sure she stays with all of them, as they all need her attention.
