My dog is jaundiced, cold, and won't pee or poop. What's wrong?

Hello, thank you for your question about Pogo. Based on the results attached and the evidence of jaundice I would be very concerned that Pogo is experiencing some kind of liver disease. There are many liver conditions that can lead to these signs such as infection, inflammation, gall stones, or cancer. If possible I would strongly urge you to have Pogo seen by a veterinarian that can perform an abdominal ultrasound. Maggie is very ill and needs to see a veterinarian right away. The yellow color could be because she has liver disease or she has a red blood cell disorder going on. She needs to have bloodwork and xrays done as soon as possible to figure out what is wrong and help her to feel better.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Oh dear, this doesn't sound good. If Brownie is having dark or black stools, this can be an indication of an upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Jaundice is caused by liver disease and dark yellow urine signals she may be dehydrated. It sounds like there is a lot going on with Brownie. Portal hypertension (pressure that build up from the veins connecting the liver and gastrointestinal tract) can cause decreased blood flow into the liver (often due to injury or damage to the liver) and blood to back up in veins going to the stomach and the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. This can cause the veins to enlarge and swell and rupture which can cause bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. It may be Brownie's liver dysfunction is the primary cause of the melena (digested blood in stool making it look black). IV fluids and liver protectants (like SAMe) may help. I would recommend an ultrasound and biopsy of the liver). I am sorry to hear Brownie is having so many issues. I hope this gets better soon!

Bilirubin can be present due to a liver problem or rapid destruction of red blood cells. Blood work and an abdominal ultrasound are the two most commonly used diagnostics. Treatment depends on the cause. Liver disease is managed with medication and diet. Red blood cell destruction is managed with medications (depending on the cause). This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection. Urine could be more concentrated than normal (given the inappetence and the diarrhoea causing mild dehydration). The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food (a bland diet would be best- boiled chicken and rice). A check up is needed if inappetence last for more than 24hours. There are many things this could be: * tick fever * liver disease (even with normal blood values they can have liver disease) * immune mediated disease causing destruction of red blood cells * a toxicity of some kind Those are the ones that come to mind right away.
