My pug isn't eating, has jaundice & kidney issues. What should I do?

Poor Kiko! Jaundice is usually by either liver dysfunction or destruction of red blood cells. The doctor will run some blood work to determine which is present and then determine appropriate treatment. You are doing the right thing by having her seen quickly. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Hepatitis (infection and inflammation of liver) is a very serious condition and is very hard to treat. If there is an internal medicine specialist in the area I would recommend having Nala seen by them. Otherwise I would be talking with your vet about testing for infectious diseases. However, it looks like they have treated her with broad spectrum antibiotics as well as IV fluids. I would recommend continuing treatment. She may need a feeding tube placed to try to keep her protein up during this illness. Unfortunately, with how severe this is, she may or may not pull through it, but the best chance of her making it through is to be aggressive with her treatment. I would suggest continuing to monitor her liver and white cell count, and to have imaging done and possible samples of her liver to try to determine the cause of the infection. Otherwise I would be talking to your vet about the parasites and infections present in your area and get covered with certain antibiotics. The white cells have increased however not that much, and the liver enzymes are actually improving if I can read the dates right from your picture. This is very hopeful. I would continue with antibiotics (IV if you cannot get them in orally), as well as IV fluids and I would think about syringe feeding or placing a feeding tube. This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. A check up at your local veterinarian is needed as soon as possible if inappetence is so persistent. Nutritional support is absolutely required. Hello, sorry to hear about Mango. The not eating and drooling make me worry about some form of dental disease or being nauseous from an upset GI tract. These possibilities should be explored thoroughly by your veterinarian. Mango may need an oral exam and full blood work to start. He may eventually need an abdominal ultrasound. You can offer him a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken and low fat cottage cheese to see if he will eat some. If he is not better by tomorrow then have his veterinarian evaluate him. Hope this helps and best of luck

While these are vague clinical signs, these may be due to some sort of underlying disease of either the gastrointestinal tract, liver or kidney disease, and/or a possible neoplastic or cancerous process. Since he has had a decreased appetite long enough to lose weight, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. Your vet can perform bloodwork to look for any evidence of systemic illness that may be contributing to his clinical signs. His clinical signs are unlikely due to behavioral changes alone. Hello. I am sorry to hear your pug isn't feeling well. If your dog is dull and lethargic, and not wanting to eat, it could be a sign of something stuck in her stomach or intestines, or a gastritis/pancreatitis. I would suggest having her seen by a veterinarian. Alternatively, you can cook her boneless, skinless, boiled chicken breast and some boiled rice. If she eats this and keeps it down, I would feed her small meals of this for a couple days, and see if she gets better. If she does then it was mild gastritis, but if she vomits or continues to be lethargic I would bring her to a vet right away.

I'm sorry to hear that Caramel is not feeling well. The paperwork showing "female" instead of male is a typo somewhere. Nothing that was run in those tests determine's the dog's sex, so I suspect that was entered wrong at the lab. His kidney values are a bit high, but they aren't crazy high. If a urinalysis was not performed, talk to your vet about running a urinalysis as well, as this will help determine whether those values being high may be in part due to whether or not he is dehydrated (typically the "USG" or "urine specific gravity" is what we are looking for to help interpret this). You may also want to talk to your vet about an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly); having images of the kidneys and bladder as well as the rest of the abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, GI tract, spleen, adrenal glands) can be helpful in terms of what the most likely cause of his clinical signs are. Another consideration since he is "hardly able to get up" would be a painful condition that's making him not want to move; ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere. To summarize, here is what I recommend you do. Take him to your vet and ask about a urinalysis. Ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere (belly, back, neck, joints).
