Why does my dog have itchy, spreading bumps on his nose and muzzle?

It's a little difficult to tell from your picture, but I think the spot on the muzzle looks more like a skin mass or growth that could be infected or inflamed. The other spots look like they might be signs of a bacterial or fungal skin infection which can occur secondary to allergies. I'd recommend having your vet take a look in person.

I am concerned that Racer either has a reaction to something - like a spider or insect bite, or this could be a type of infection, possibly fungal like cryptococcus. I do recommend you take him in to see your vet tomorrow, they may suggest a needle biopsy to determine what is the cause, or possibly a blood test. I would expect they may suggest antibiotics to cover until results are back. It may be more apparent on physical exam as to the cause.

It sounds like he has likely come out in hives from a sting or rubbing something he is allergic to. Yiu can give him.an antihistamine or apply antihistamine cream if you have it. Otherwise they should settle eventually or you can go to a vet for an exam and steroid shot.

A couple of things come to mind as possibilities. This could be an acute hypersensitivity reaction to something - bug bite/sting, perhaps - or possibility a severe bacterial infection called furunculosis. There are also some immune-mediated/auto-immune diseases that attack the top of the nose. See your vet about this. An appropriate treatment plan might be to start antibiotics and if no improvement after 2 weeks consider a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal infection). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). It sounds like Ruffo may be experiencing an allergic reaction. This could be due to something in the environment, foods, bee stings, etc, especially if it is causing facial swelling or puffiness. I would definitely schedule a visit with your vet to figure out the underlying cause and get him started on some meds such as an antihistamines to help with the swelling and itchiness. If the swelling worsens on his nose, or appears on his face, head, or neck, seeking care sooner is best as this is considered a serious condition.
