My dog has an itchy rash near his ear and head. What can I do?

It looks like your kid has a pretty severe ear infection there. The redness is inflammation and the gray area is thickening of the external ear canal from chronic inflammation. What would be best would be for your pup to be seen by your family vet for an ear exam and cytology. In order to treat this appropriately your vet will need to know if there are bacteria (and what type) or yeast or both in the ear canals and if the eardrum is intact. An anti inflammatory may also be needed because of the thickening. If ear infections are a chronic problem for your pup underlying allergy may also need to be explored. This year does look pretty ouchy. You can try cleaning it was something like epiotic advanced ear cleaner but with how swollen it is it may not be very successful. Your best option is to take Cedric to the veterinarian as soon as they're open and can see you to get this addressed. Fortunately most of these respond quite quickly to therapy. Do not give him any human pain medication as it could be very toxic to dogs.

Ouch, poor Remington! You are correct - most ear infections in dogs stem from underlying allergies. Allergy issues in dogs mostly cause skin problems and ears are skin, after all. The allergies could be associated with environmental issues (atopy), food allergies or flea allergies. I can certainly see the discharge and swelling in Remington's ear. Her excessive scratching obviously indicates that she's quite uncomfortable. Allergy issues cause dogs to itch, which damages the skin barrier and then leads to ear infections from an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria in the ear canal. There are no effective over the counter treatments for ear infections. At this point, I recommend taking Remington to her vet for an exam and ear cytology. Your vet will be able to look at her ear discharge under a microscope to determine the type of infection present, and will then prescribe an appropriate medication based on those results. Until you get to the vet, consider putting an e-collar (cone) on Remington to prevent her from causing further damage to hear ears. I hope this helps and that she's feeling better soon!

This presentation is due to a skin infection, possibly caused by bacteria. A veterinary consultation is needed in these cases as antibiotics will be quickly resolving this problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). You will need to put an e-collar on your dog , so she does not scratch herself bloody. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. take your dog to a veterinarian or Pet ER for a skin exam. lease take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications, possibly give an injection to stop the itching.

This presentation is likely to be caused by a bilateral severe bacterial infection of the ear canals. Possibly an underlying allergy (especially if Jack is scratching all over his body) could be present. Antibiotic ear drops and possibly systemic treatment (anti-inflammatory medications and oral antibiotics) are most likely required. A check up is essential to determine underlying cause and treat appropriately. I recommend having her ear examined by your veterinarian. She could have ear mites, a yeast or bacterial infection. It will get worse quickly if not treated properly and she could develop an ear hematoma from scratching. Ear problems are very painful if left untreated. They will prescribe medication that will cure the problem and reduce the scratching also. In the meantime I would put her in a cone so she can’t continue to scratch the ear.
