My dachshund keeps scratching her swollen ear. What should I do?

Ouch, poor Remington! You are correct - most ear infections in dogs stem from underlying allergies. Allergy issues in dogs mostly cause skin problems and ears are skin, after all. The allergies could be associated with environmental issues (atopy), food allergies or flea allergies. I can certainly see the discharge and swelling in Remington's ear. Her excessive scratching obviously indicates that she's quite uncomfortable. Allergy issues cause dogs to itch, which damages the skin barrier and then leads to ear infections from an overgrowth of yeast and/or bacteria in the ear canal. There are no effective over the counter treatments for ear infections. At this point, I recommend taking Remington to her vet for an exam and ear cytology. Your vet will be able to look at her ear discharge under a microscope to determine the type of infection present, and will then prescribe an appropriate medication based on those results. Until you get to the vet, consider putting an e-collar (cone) on Remington to prevent her from causing further damage to hear ears. I hope this helps and that she's feeling better soon!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I would recommend having your vet look in to the ear canals with an otoscope. Sometimes there is discharge deeper in the ear canal that can not be seen from the outside. If that is the case the Vet can use a Q-tip safely to remove some of the wax and look under the microscope to see if it is a yeast or bacterial infection. Some dogs will shake and scratch with even mild overgrowth of bacteria or yeast. Otherwise she may just be itchy due to allergies and you can try an antihistamine. See the links below. This is likely an ear infection and I am afraid that there is likely an underlying allergy causing him to scratch a lot and continue to cause further trauma to the ear. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as this is likely causing him a lot of discomfort. They would be able to diagnose this and start therapy. That swelling is likely to be caused by an hematoma in between the cartilage of the ear (pinna) and the skin. An immediate check up is required as the swelling could potentially get worse and deteriorate. Primary cause of the otitis inside external ear canal must be identified and treated. Very commonly the gunk is caused by either an ear infection cause by bacteria or yeast proliferation. Ear drops and a buster collar will be required. This is actually filled with blood. This is a hematoma between the skin layers in the ear flap. They develop when dogs scratch or shake their heads excessively, usually from an ear infection or some type of allergy. Generally this requires a veterinary exam and surgical drainage. They will also check Dozer's ears to see if they are infected or try to find the cause of the hematoma. He will need to wear a cone probably until the ear heals. Without treatment the ear swelling will go down but it may take a month or more and the ear will scar up and become deformed. It sounds like there are a couple of things wrong with Brownie at the moment. The swelling of his ear could be caused by an ear infection, and that could affect his hearing preventing him from responding to your call the other day. The scratching could be due to an ear infection, but it could also be caused by fleas, allergies, ringworm, or mites. With these number of symptoms, I'd recommend a vet visit first thing Monday. Sometimes it means there is an infection present such as a bacterial infection. It could indicate an underlying allergy of some sort (environmental, contact allergy, or to food). Redness around the ears especially could mean an ear infection is present. My advice would be to take her into see her veterinarian so this can be evaluated. Your veterinarian may check her ears for an infection and may recommend antibiotics or certain topical medications depending on what your vet suspects.
