My dog's broken nail is swollen and into the quick. What to do? Cost?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My dog had broken her toenail somehow, it isn’t bleeding but you can tell it is broken way down into the quick of her nail bed and it is swollen. What should I do at this point? How much would something like this cost to get treatment?

The only thing that can relieve this is to have the nail cut at the level of the break, this needs to be done by your vet. the cutting itself should not cost more than 20$ but in some cases it needs to be done under sedation which could cost 50-70$.

Hello. Unfortunately, the only way to get this to start to heal is to clip the nail where it has broken. It will hurt, but once it is gone, your pup will actually feel much more comfortable. In my office, we clip really fast & then bandage the foot with an antibiotic cream that contains lidocaine. This numbs the nerve & allows things to heal quite nicely. While this is technically not an emergency, it is also a situation that you do not want to ignore, either. Most veterinary clinics are open to some degree. They may not allow pet parents into the hospital, but will meet you in the parking lot to take your pet inside for treatment. I would start calling around to see who is available to help with this. That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open

My dog's nail is broken high up, not bleeding. What should I do?

If it's not bleeding it may not have injured the quick but I can't tell from the photo. The broken part of the nail needs to be removed and of the break is behind the quick, Loki needs to be sedated and clip behind the break (which is painful so they get sedated). Since you are unable to tell how severe the break is, I recommend to have Loki examined first thing tomorrow morning. Restrict the activity today and do not allow him to climb up and down on the couch. He should only be outside on a leash. My dog's quicked nail bled, and now her paw is swollen. What to do?

The swelling will likely go down with some time. You can also massage it to get the blood moving better. I would put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking if she is still messing with it. If the swelling isn't improving in a few hours, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure there isn't an infection causing the swelling. I hope this helps!

Soak it in soap and warm water to keep it clean. Once it is dry you can place medicated powder in between the toes to help minimize moisture to dry it out. You can place neosporin around the nail bed also. If this does not help then you will need to see a vet

They won't take Brent away and put you in jail for not clipping his nails! It sounds like he does need his nails clipped, and if you are having trouble doing it yourself, I would take him into the vet. The good news is that getting your dog's nails clipped is actually really cheap as long as he doesn't need a sedative to do it. Typically it costs between $10-$15 to get it done. Not much at all! I would call local clinics to get their price, and make an appointment for him. I hope this helps!

My dog's nail broke to the quick. Can I cut it and stop bleeding?

Hello. I wouldn't recommend cutting the nail as the quik will bleed forever and it will be painful. What we typically do is grab the nail with hemostats and pull very quickly. This leaves the quik in place but removes the nail that is broken. I spray with local anesthetic spray first. If it bleeds after some flour or baking soda can help stop it. If you don't feel comfortable pulling it off, or don't have hemostats to properly grab the nail, I would recommend having it done by a vet. That way some local anesthetic can be used as well.
