What should I do if my dog has indigestion or an upset stomach?

A better choice for an antacid would be Pepcid. You can discuss it and get a dose based on Bella's weight from your veterinarian. Legally, we are prohibited from telling you to give it and providing a dose without a physical exam and a VPCR (Veterinarian-Patient-Client Relationship). The bland diet is definitely a good idea. I already answered this question. You need to use an oral antacid medication. There is nothing else you can give to stop stomach acid. If you don't want to use the medication then feed the dog smaller, more frequent meals so his stomach does not stay empty for too long.

Typically, a bland diet (such as boiled white meat chicken and white rice) can be helpful for medication-induced GI upset. If your dog isn't eating, vomiting, having diarrhea or otherwise feeling ill, then I would recommend having him evaluated by his veterinarian, as something more than just a medication reaction may be going on. I wouldn't necessarily expect all of these signs with indigestion, and I think it would be a good idea to have Bobby examined by your vet. An elevated temperature in particular should not occur with reflux, and it is rare (though possible) for a dog to develop a cough from reflux. I would not recommend Gaviscon - it is not typically used in dogs.

Puppies do not normally have issues with indigestion or stomach acid issues. Much more common are bacterial infections, viral infections or parasites. The fact that your puppy has not eaten in 2 days means that it feels poorly. Puppies are this age are fragile and require earlier veterinary intervention. I recommend to have your puppy examined by a veterinarian today since it has not eaten in 2 days so that means low blood sugar and dehydration become more likely. You may try offering a bland diet but it may not help. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma.
