My dog won't eat, gurgles, and throws up yellow bile. Is it reflux?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 1 month old | 45 lbs

My dog will go through phases of not wanting to eat at all and then her stomach will make loud gurgling noises during this time and eventually she throws up yellow bile and then will want to eat again. I have taken her to the vet and they said they thought it was acid reflux but from my understanding you need to eat to get acid reflux?

Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma.
