Why is my neutered dog leaking urine in his sleep after a UTI?

He is so cute! If you are finding that he is urinating while he is sleeping then this definitely could be incontinence. I would talk to your vet about trying Proin (aka phenylpropanolamine) to see if this helps. This helps to tighten the urethral sphincter to prevent incontinence. It is used most commonly on female dogs but I have had some success using it in males. If you are seeing puddles throughout the house, he could have a urinary tract infection. I would have your vet do a urinalysis on him to see if there is any bacteria present. Your vet will be able to prescribe him the proper antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

Urinary incontinence is the main option, although not very common in male dogs. i would recommend asking your vet to send a fresh urine analysis to an external lab to make sure there is no infection before starting treating urine incontinence.

It sounds like Blacky had a urinary tract infection, which sometimes can become recurrent or resistant and difficult to treat. His urine may need to be cultured again to see if the infection has resolved. Sometimes bladder stones or polyps, or diseases like Cushing's or kidney disease could also cause urine leakage. Finally, he may have urinary incontinence due to a neurologic issue and require medication to help stop the leakage. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see if there are any additional tests they would recommend.

He could have some inflammation from the neuter or a brief lapse in house training from the stress of the surgery and anesthesia. He could also have a urinary tract infection. I recommend calling your Vet Monday and see if you can drop off a urine sample. They can test the urine for infection. If he has a urinary tract infection then they can prescribe antibiotics. If hes doesn't have an infection ask if they can prescribe and anti-inflammatory, if he isn't on one already from his neuter, in cause it's just some inflammation. This is actually normal with a painful UTI. She probably does not want to urinate voluntarily because it hurts, So she just holds the urine. The urinary bladder has a safety system with pressure receptors. Once the bladder gets too full, there is a pressure build up and that activates those receptors which then make the bladder sphincter muscles relax and urine can leave the bladder before it bursts. So as soon as Carmen lies down the pressure increases, the urine flows. This should stop when there will be less pain when the inflammation goes away. This may take a few days. IF she is urinating and not knowing she is going, then she likely has incontinence. Pets will also often have pooling of urine if they are incontinent, which is typically on the bed or anywhere that they lay. Fortunately, there is medication that your vet can prescribe for Brandi to help with her incontinence once the trial of antibiotics are complete. Its best to place a doggy diaper on her until then. Keep in mind that this may be unrelated to the crystals and can even be something like urinary incontinence. I would continue monitoring for signs of painful urination or bloody urine. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Further diagnostics would include abdominal imaging and lab work.
