My dog is in heat and constipated. What can I do to help her?

Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. Hormonal changes can sometimes cause changes to the GI tract. I would keep an eye on Diamond and if she doesn't have a bowel movement in a few days, has other signs of illness, or seems in distress, schedule a visit with your vet.

A few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) or a tablespoon of Psyllium powder (unflavored) can help move things along. However the other symptoms you mentioned do sound concerning to me. Decreased appetite along with drinking more water frequently and constipation may signal a kidney function issue, liver issue, or may be due the development of diabetes among other causes. My recommendation would be to have Pretty girl seen by her veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam and perhaps some blood work to check her organ function as there may be an underlying health issue here. Hydration and exercise. Get him to drink some water or a water/unflavored PediaLyte mix. Walk him around the house or play for 20-30 minutes. You can also try stimulating elimination by using a warm, wet washcloth and circle the rectum gently. If he doesn't defecate, see your veterinarian.

Poor Rea! I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what you are seeing. Constipation is not common in dogs and can actually be diarrhea. Additionally, constipation is not expected to be related to temperature and may be a completely different problem. You need to make sure Rea has access to air conditioning or other cooling measures. She also needs an area with plenty of shade and water. Thanks for the question. If Ruby has been dehydrated, this will slow down the movement of food through her colon and lead to constipation. If it is constipation that is making her uncomfortable, there is usually a reason they are becoming constipation, but if you are not able to do any testing, this may be difficult to figure out. Adding a tablespoon or two of canned pumpkin to her diet can help constipation. Hopefully, that will help her be more comfortable. If she doesn't want to drink, sometimes offering ice cubes to eat can help increase their water intake, or putting a little low sodium chicken broth in the water. I hope Ruby is feeling better soon.

No, this degree of constipation is never normal. I strongly recommend a full vet check urgently - she may have an obstruction of prolapse which could become very difficult to treat due to stretching of muscles and nerves if not addressed in time
