My dog has IMHA. How long until his blood cells and gums improve?

In severe cases, animals require blood transfusions while their bone marrow regenerates red blood cells. Other times, depending on severity, the animal can get by without a transfusion. Red blood cell regeneration can take 5-7 days so it is best to recheck his PCV in a week.

The anaemia will take time to rectify itself, it can take several months for the gums to go back to their normal color. the most important thing though is that she is responding well to the treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Olive! It takes the bone marrow 3-5 days to respond to anemia before it starts producing and releasing new red blood cells. If the anemia is regenerative then I would assume the HCT would start to slowly rise. I would expect the HCT to start to improve in 5-7 days. I would have her PCV/TS or HCT rechecked in a week. Once the steroids take effect, the blood count should start to rise very slowly, it usually takes more than a month to go back to normal levels. If there is absolutely not change within a week, a blood transfusion will probably be considered.

Poor Chantilly, i am sure you are quite worried about her. If your girl has IMHA what this means is that her body is attacking and destroying her own red blood cells. If enough are lost it will make her anemic which can cause the symptoms you report. IMHA can arise without a cause (idiopathic) but many diseases can also cause it as well (secondary IMHA) and low red count is not always IMHA (low red count just means we need to find out where they went or if the body is not producing them). The safest plan would be to have her red count rechecked to see if this is contributing to her symptoms. Pets with IMHA are treated with pred typically but other meds can be used and some cases are more severe then others. I am sorry to hear Stevie is not feeling well. Some gastrointestinal parasites drink blood through the intestinal wall. This will cause a patient to be anemic. However the level of anemia is important to know. IF the red blood cell count gets low enough a patient might need a blood transfusion or could pass away from this. If the red blood cell count is only slightly low and the parasites are treated over time (maybe a few weeks) the patient will recover and the anemia will resolve. I hope that helps

Hello, the process of increasing his platelets is not that simply described or easy to predict. It sounds like his platelets were decreased due to the infection with Babesia. Therefore, if he has been undergoing treatment for his low platelets, then I would have expected that his number would've increased. Platelets are made in the bone marrow, and the turn around time can be within a day. The best way to truly tell if his platelets have improved is to have them checked with another cbc.
