It is ok to use them together though these are typically used together temporarily and then some of them will be weaned off to hopefully at some point be off medications. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Olive! It takes the bone marrow 3-5 days to respond to anemia before it starts producing and releasing new red blood cells. If the anemia is regenerative then I would assume the HCT would start to slowly rise. I would expect the HCT to start to improve in 5-7 days. I would have her PCV/TS or HCT rechecked in a week. The anaemia will take time to rectify itself, it can take several months for the gums to go back to their normal color. the most important thing though is that she is responding well to the treatment.

Possibilities include an immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in which case other immunosuppressive drugs can be used with prednisone or possibly an infectious disease. They would be able to recommend further but reaching out to a specialist would be an option for further tests/recommendations. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

In severe cases, animals require blood transfusions while their bone marrow regenerates red blood cells. Other times, depending on severity, the animal can get by without a transfusion. Red blood cell regeneration can take 5-7 days so it is best to recheck his PCV in a week.

I wish there were a set number of days to expect this to happen, but there just isn't. The body can respond very quickly and normalize platelets or increase platelets just about at any time. THe key is to recheck platelet levels every 2-4 weeks as well as monitoring him for any signs of toxicity (i.e. Lethargy, lack of appetite, spontaneous bleeding, respiratory distress, etc).
