My dog has flea anemia. Will her white gums return to normal, and how long?

The anaemia will take time to rectify itself, it can take several months for the gums to go back to their normal color. the most important thing though is that she is responding well to the treatment.

I am sorry to hear Stevie is not feeling well. Some gastrointestinal parasites drink blood through the intestinal wall. This will cause a patient to be anemic. However the level of anemia is important to know. IF the red blood cell count gets low enough a patient might need a blood transfusion or could pass away from this. If the red blood cell count is only slightly low and the parasites are treated over time (maybe a few weeks) the patient will recover and the anemia will resolve. I hope that helps

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Olive! It takes the bone marrow 3-5 days to respond to anemia before it starts producing and releasing new red blood cells. If the anemia is regenerative then I would assume the HCT would start to slowly rise. I would expect the HCT to start to improve in 5-7 days. I would have her PCV/TS or HCT rechecked in a week. In most cases, it takes about four days for new blood cells to be produced, but can take longer if there was a lot missing, poor nutrition, or a health issue affecting it for a long time, so it may take several weeks depending on response. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry about little Zora. Yes, it can take some time for her body to heal. The blood transfusion probably saved her life, but now her bone marrow has to kick into high gear to replace those missing & destroyed red blood cells. It can take up to 3 weeks for her blood count to return & stay at a normal level. This does not mean she will be weak & lethargic the whole time, she should get stronger every day. Stay in close contact with your veterinarian, do not skip recheck visits, & keep her as protected as possible. Her immune system is pretty weak, not only from being so young, but from the anemia, so keep her indoors & away from any unvaccinated cats. With time, she should get well, & have a normal life. The gums do look pale. Anemia in a puppy is usually caused by fleas or intestinal parasites. Please use a flea comb to remove any fleas. You can dip it in warm soapy dishwater to rinse it off and kill the fleas. I'm glad you are taking her in for an exam tomorrow. Please bring a fecal sample also so they can do a exam for parasites. If she's feeling good and playing she should be fine, I would not have her be too active, let her rest since they get tired and weak from anemia. Anemia in puppies can be caused by tick born infections and from intestinal parasites. There is also a small chance that a puppy would be born with a bone marrow problem. The doxycycline has a good chance of a cure, but I would highly encourage you to visit with your veterinarian about a broad spectrum deworming protocol to make sure that is addressed as well. Depending on how anemic he is will determine how long he takes to recover. However, if the medication is working you should see improvement within 2 weeks or so.
