Can 2.5ml Hydrocodone cause breathing issues or death in a 10lb dog?

Hello. Hydrocodone can decrease heart rate as it takes away stress and pain. It does not typically directly decrease the heart rate, only secondarily by decreasing stress and pain. Normal heart rate for a resting dog at home, for a small breed dog (you have not posted a breed however small breed dogs are more prone to heart disease) is between 70-120. If your dog's heart rate is dropping less then 60 I would have him to the vet. Also, if you are feeling heart rate by pulses vs. listening to the heart, your dog could be 'dropping beats' from an arrhythmia, and should be seen by a vet. 15mg is a dosage for a 7.5kg dog (16.5lbs), so this is a relatively large dose your puppy ingested. It is likely that your puppy will just be very sedated and sleep it out, however if you notice any trouble breathing then you need to rush your puppy to a vet. You can also take Blossom to your veterinarian now to have him inject some Narcan to counteract the Codeine.

Any treatment now will be purely supportive. Monitor for vomiting, jaundice, lethargy, increased respiration and anemia. Liver and kidney function should be checked via blood test to rule out damage from the dose of acetaminophen ingested. Further supportive care may be indicated if liver/kidney function is compromised. This may include IV fluids and blood transfusions if indicated.

It depends which kind of opioids, some of them can depress the breathing and are contraindicated with respiratory problems. Normally they are used at very small doses just to tip the edge of anxiety off in pneumonia patients and they would not cause such a serious consequence as death on their own.

You should not give your dog hydrocodone unless it was prescribed by your vet, it is a very strong and dangerous medication and it can only be given under very specific circumstances. Tylenol should never be given to a dog. in most cases for severe pain your vet will prescribe a combination of Rymadil or Metacam with Tramadol, these are all prescription meds as well which you can only get through your vet.

This drug is not typically used orally in dogs, but this is a dose that would be within the normal range for IV. I think that most opiates are not as available when given orally to dogs so while Gizzmo may be sedate I would guess you won’t see any signs of toxicity.
