My dog ate hydrocodone. What should I do for medication poisoning?

This drug is not typically used orally in dogs, but this is a dose that would be within the normal range for IV. I think that most opiates are not as available when given orally to dogs so while Gizzmo may be sedate I would guess you won’t see any signs of toxicity. In dogs high doses (100mg/kg body weight) are needed to induce toxicity - which results in liver and kidney failure and other side effects. The dosage your Border Collie ingested should be relatively safe (50mg/kg), but I would strongly recommend a check up anyway to give gastroprotectants medications and reduce gastrointestinal absorption.

The effects of acetaminophen poisoning in dogs are quite serious, often causing non-repairable liver damage. Dogs will typically experience acetaminophen toxicity at over 75 mg per kg body weight - Lady Girl ingested 1000mg and the toxic dose for her would be around 2,200 mg (if she truly is 65#). She may be OK or she may get sick. There is no way to know. At this point you will just have to monitor her and see. The most common symptoms that you may notice in pets suffering from acetaminophen toxicity include: Brownish-gray colored gums Labored breathing Swollen face, neck or limbs Hypothermia (reduced body temperature) Vomiting Jaundice (yellowish color to skin, whites of eyes), due to liver damage Coma If you notice any of those signs you need to get her to a vet right away. If she has a problem with her hock (ankle) you need to get her to a vet for an exam. That way you get a proper diagnosis as to what is actually wrong with her leg and then get a medication made for dogs to help her. Depending on the amount that was in the tube, you may see vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloody stool, abdominal pain or excessive thirst/urination. The tube itself presents another issue since it can cause obstruction or internal injury. Ideally, Mia should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Induction of vomiting may be contraindicated since the tube may cause damage coming up. After a physical exam, the vet can determine the best course of action to retrieve or remove the tube while treating any symptoms.

The toxic component in vicoprofen is ibuprofen, the formulation of the drug should be 200mg ibuprofen. if he ingested only one, it should not be enough to cause toxicity but i would expect lethargy, sleepiness and maybe vomiting as well.

I know this is a very worrying time for you, but you did completely the right thing in taking the dog to the vet so quickly. If you had him vomit within 40 minutes then the majority of the gastric contents and the noxious substance will have come up. Sometimes I would also administer activated charcoal but it isn't strictly necessary when they vomit a good lot up. The medication that the vet gave you will help to line the stomach in case the substance has damaged the lining, the other medication is a liver support as it deals with a lot of potentially toxic substances. There really isn't much more you can do aside from being vigilant. If you knew exactly what the dog ingested sometimes other drugs can be administered such as vitamin k in rat poisoning. However your dog should be absolutely fine considering how quick you acted. You could feed Blue some liver as it helps with regenerating red blood cells etc. Best of luck, if you have any concerns at all please ask!
