Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rosie!

From the pictures it looks like Rosie may have a hot spot (superficial skin infection). Hot spots can start off small then spread quickly and become larger and painful. Goldens commonly get them from ear infections or from being wet from swimming.

I recommend that you take her to the Vet today. The Vet will clip the fur away, clean the area and prescribe antibiotics, steroids, and likely something topical. They will check for an ear infection and prescribe ear wash and ear drops if needed.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I think what you are trying to show is an area of moist dermatitis on the skin, commonly known as a hot spot. This is usually allergy driven, but sometimes all it takes is a flea or mosquito bite, or some other small irritation to irritate the skin & start Rosie scratching. I am glad that you were able to shave her coat, as this makes treating & watching the area so much easier. Use a mild disinfectant, such as betadine or 2% chlorhexidine to clean the lesion. Both of these are readily available at your local pharmacy. Then you can apply a small amount of cortisone cream twice a day for a few days & most of these will dry up pretty quickly. It is also a good idea to have Rosie examined by your veterinarian as soon as you can as she may be scratching her ear because of an ear infection, & this should be addressed professionally. If this is allergy driven, your veterinarian can also make additional recommendations as to what medications may be best for Rosie. Take care.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a hotspot which is a very inflamed focal infection. Usually these occur secondary to allergies, among other possibilities. It is very important to treat these infections appropriately and the sooner they get treated the better for the patient. I recommend that you have Buster evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They are likely going to prescribe anti-inflammatory medications and antibiotics. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar (which you may obtain from your local pet store), to avoid further self trauma by him scratching at it. Good luck and have a good night!

Help! My 9-month-old Golden has a red, moist skin spot. What is it?

This looks like an area of moist dermatitis, or hot spot. They get these from licking or rubbing an area of skin that was irritated from an insect bite, allergy or injury. To treat this I recommend trimming the fur around the area, then cleaning off the discharge with warm water and antibacterial soap. Once it’s rinsed and dried you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. The most important thing is to prevent her from scratching or rubbing this area so it can heal. Use a cone if needed. If it’s not improving then I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. They may give medication to prevent the itching, and possible a topical spray or ointment to dry up the skin. Hot spots are common in Goldens so I’d have a cone and medication on hand to treat these at home before they get bad. My dog has a bloody matted spot with a hole. Should I see a vet?

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This looks likely to be a cyst, which is a benign skin growth that can rupture and exude a thick proteinaceous discharge. I recommend having Roscoe seen by a Vet, as cysts can become infected when they rupture, and Roscoe may need a course of antibiotics. Your vet can then let you know if they have any concerns about the lesion when they’re able to examine it. In the meantime, keep it clean using soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well) and soak/wipe it clean a few times daily. Hope this helps!

I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as this will likely require local therapy with cleaning of the site, pain control medications and antibiotics. My dog has a hard, swollen wound. Is it a hot spot? How to treat?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Based on the photos, it appears that Girly may have a severely infected hot spot. This could have happened from moisture becoming trapped on the fur, allergies, a wound, etc. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Girly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. This needs to have the hair completely clipped from the area, antiseptically cleaned and an oral antibiotic most likely. I hope this helps! My dog has crusty, watery skin on her head. Could it be a hot spot?

This may be a hot spot which is an area of infected and inflammed skin that can be uncomfortable for the pet. Pixie should see your family vet to have the hair in the area clipped and the skin cleaned. Then treatment can be prescribed to treat any infection and stop the itch. Given the location her ears should be examined as well. If deemed a hot spot, and she has recurrent issues with them, underlying allergy may be the cause.
